Please note this position will, at the earliest, start late July 2024 and will end in August 2025.
Reporting to the Music School Director, this position manages the day-to-day operations of the Music School. The Manager establishes and maintains a welcoming, friendly, and professional presence with families and funders, with a specific emphasis on maintaining the holistic style of program delivery for which the school has become known. Under the direction of the Music School Director, the Manager assists in the development of communication tools for the Music School and assists in planning and implementing special events. Working in a unionized environment, the Manager is part of the Music School hiring team, and responsible for the management, supervision, and development of over 20 Music School Teachers and the Assistant Manager. The Manager works 30 hours per week generally between 2pm-8pm or 12pm-6pm on weekdays with the occasional weekend shift.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise and direct teaching staff to ensure teachers strive to maintain optimum levels of music education and experience in the classes offered.
  • Maintain a proactive approach to furthering student and staff opportunities beyond their lessons.
  • Manage, coach, and mentor staff in all areas including performance, workplace behaviours, and attendance to ensure compliance with Agency policies and procedures.
  • Administer the union's collective agreement as applied to the members of the Music School teaching team.
  • Manage administrative duties for the music school: lesson schedule, student attendance, book orders, billing to families, important school calendar dates, tracking important and general administrative duties in day-to-day operations.
  • Maintain school database, keeping student/family records up to date.
  • Manage program and client financial information in a confidential and discreet manner.
  • Assist with the recruitment, interviewing, and training of teachers and staff as required.
  • Schedules staff and students as required; completes payroll for Music School staff on a biweekly basis.
  • Track teacher's performance and conducts corrections if deemed necessary, offering feedback and appraisals in consultation with the Director.
  • Assist with acquisition and documentation of school instruments, instrument donations, and instrument rentals to families.
  • Assist with program publicity and communications outreach initiatives, working with the Director, as well as members of the Philanthropy and Communications team in maintaining funder relations.
  • Represent the Music School at occasional offsite Dixon Hall events.
  • Coordination of recitals; assisting with preparation and organization of workshops and special events; coordination of extracurricular events and activities such as performances, field trips, or camps.
  • Support both public and in-house meetings, presentations, and grant proposals by proficiently using visual art materials, editing software, and multimedia platforms.
  • Communicate and share with other departments in the agency and attend regular monthly management meetings.
  • Open and close the building as necessary.
Special Events – Music for Life Fundraiser, March Break Music Camp
  • Serve as a member of the Music School Special Events team that is responsible for planning and the operation of events such as our Music for Life gala, March Break and Summer Music Camps.
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications
  • Post-secondary degree in Music/Art or Art Administration.
  • Minimum 2-years' experience in a managerial role, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Knowledge of Music Pedagogy, teaching methods and materials.
  • Advanced written and verbal English language communication skills; fluency in additional languages, relevant to the communities of service, will be considered an asset.
  • Experience teaching/working in a diverse, multi-cultural environment; preference given to those with not-for-profit experience.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Proven experience with peer management.
  • Knowledge of MS Office, proven administrative and database skills.
  • Proven stakeholder relationship development skills.
  • Able to skilfully, strategically, respectfully, appropriately, and tactfully manage to achieve the mission, goals, and business objectives of the music school.
  • Experienced user of visual art materials, editing software and multimedia platforms.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with a proven ability to manage multiple projects, achieve results, work under pressure, and meet tight deadlines.
  • The ability to work independently but also to function in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated proclivity for accurate record keeping skills.
  • The ability to effectively communicate with people from diverse cultural and social backgrounds, in keeping with Dixon Hall Music School's holistic approach.
  • High standards of professionalism and professional ethics.
  • Required to provide evidence of full vaccination (minimum of two doses) against COVID-19 with a vaccine approved for use in Canada.
  • Must be qualified to work in Canada legally for the employer.
  • Able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening check with a ‘Clear' or satisfactory result that meets the operational requirements of the Agency.
