Position Purpose

Research themes related to the period of history from early settlement to mid-20th century, specifically within the boundaries of the Town of Georgina that can be translated into demonstrations, activities, crafts and games. These activities will be delivered by the candidate and support staff to school-aged children over several weeks of summer camp. For full details, please see attached job description.

Minimum Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of one year university or college in an appropriate field (e.g. Early Childhood Education, Childhood Development, Arts Education, Recreation, Museum Studies, History, etc.)
  • Police Vulnerable Sector Check, deemed as satisfactory by the Town;
  • Current Certification in Basic First Aid and CPR “C”;

Please note that this position may be funded through Young Canada Works, as a result candidates that meet the following requirements will be preferred.

  • Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada, be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada,
  • Be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
  • Candidates must have been a full-time student in the semester preceding the work term and plan to return to full-time studies upon the completion of the work term.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Summer Programming Assistant

Employee Group: Student

Reports To: Manager of Client and Cultural Services

Position Summary

Research themes related to the period of history from early settlement to mid-20th century, specifically within the boundaries of the Town of Georgina, that can be translated into demonstrations, activities, crafts and games. These activities will be delivered by the candidate and support staff to school-aged children over several weeks of summer camp.

Responsibilities

  • Researching themes related to the history of early settlement through to mid-20th century Georgina that can be translated into particular demonstrations, activities, crafts and games that explore these themes.
  • Creating a program schedule that outlines how and when children ages 7-12 will participate in these demonstrations, activities, crafts and games;
  • Creating supply lists for duration of programming that adhere to a budget;
  • Preparing and set up of the demonstrations, activities and games in advance of the program date;
  • Assisting and supervision of children ages 7-12 during each program session.
  • Supporting the work of other programming staff by sharing resources and ideas whenever necessary;
  • Provide a positive and safe recreational learning experience for the youth participating in the programs, including guidance through public health and safety precautions and procedures.
  • Liaising with parents and guardians regarding their child's participation status;
  • Assisting other staff in the open and close routines and in maintaining the programming space and grounds;
  • Compiling basic qualitative data on the programs being delivered that will be used to evaluate their success;
  • Providing continual feedback to the employer regarding the employee's personal work experience and make viable recommendations on how to improve this experience in the future;

Please note: Staff will receive High Five – Principles of Healthy Child Development training, specialized Camp Supervisor training from the Town of Georgina Recreation Division, and Inclusion training through ROYR (Region of York Recreationist- Special Needs Committee) or equivalent.

Minimum Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of one year university or college in an appropriate field (e.g. Early Childhood Education, Childhood Development, Arts Education, Recreation, Museum Studies, History, etc.)
  • Possess experience working with children in an informal education and recreation setting.
  • The ideal candidate must also possess organizational, communication and leadership qualities.
  • Familiarity with a museum, heritage, cultural, or non-profit organization, is an asset,
  • The ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • A valid driver's license or access to transportation is required as the museum is not on a public transportation route.
  • Police Vulnerable Sector Check, deemed as satisfactory by the Town;
  • Current Certification in Standard First Aid and CPR “C”
  • Candidates may be required to work an occasional weekend.
