Reports to: Food Services Supervisor, or in their absence, Hospitality Manager

Time Requirement: 40 hours per week (some evenings and weekends may be required)

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Food Services Lead is responsible for preparing, selling, and serving food items for a full-serve Cafe while maintaining a healthy and safe kitchen workspace. In the course of this work, the Food Services Lead will be required to use hot cooktops, sharp tools, and other cooking equipment. Occasionally, restocking and storing inventory will also be necessary. In carrying out the duties of this position, a great deal of autonomy is exercised with final overview by the Food Services Supervisor, or in their absence, Hospitality Manager.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Cafe Operations & Maintenance

  • Assist in the management of CSSI's cafe's operations
  • Ensure the cafe is operating safely and efficiently according to all relevant legislation, policies, and procedures in a manner that minimizes risk of injury, property damage, or loss of life
  • Take orders and serve guests in accordance with CSSI's guidelines for excellent customer service
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the products and pricing of food, beverages, and specials
  • Prepare food and drink items in accordance with the provided specifications/recipes
  • Operate kitchen equipment in a safe and respectful manner
  • Maintain cafe inventory weekly and assist in the ordering of kitchen equipment and food items in a manner that allows efficient/healthy cafe operations
  • Ensure the cafe's image and menu meets and exceeds CSSI's quality standards
  • Operate cash register to accept various types of tender from guests, provide proper change to guests, balance cash drawer and receipts, and document discrepancies
  • Count and handle cash with accuracy
  • Count till before every shift to ensure it contains the correct starting float amount
  • Complete accurate opening and closing reports
  • Submit daily sales reports to the Finance department
  • Brainstorm methods for increasing customer satisfaction
  • Report patron counts to the Sr. Manager, Food & Hospitality on a weekly basis
  • Inform the Hospitality Manager, or in their absence, the Sr. Manager, Food & Hospitality of any concerns or issues that arise

Staff Supervision

  • Supervise the day-to-day duties and responsibilities of the Food Services team, including (but not limited to) scheduling, catering coordination with Hospitality Manager (Catering Services), team motivation, monthly inventory, weekly purchasing, managing prep & par level, emailing daily reports at end of the day, performance management, and disciplining/terminating where required in conjunction with the Sr. Manager, Food & Hospitality and Human Resources department
  • Train and supervise all new and current Food Services staff
  • Ensure Food Services team members are maintaining order and adhering to the schedule and quality standards as outlined
  • Create and monitor weekly work schedules for Food Services staff.
  • Edit and approve hours of work, submitting bi-weekly timesheets to the Human Resources department
  • Ensure quality food, beverage, and customer service are provided to the students and faculty of Conestoga College, ensuring food items are made in a timely manner and of the highest quality, and maintain positive relationship with external and internal vendors, expediting orders where necessary

Other General Duties

  • Work in accordance with corporate by-laws, policies and procedures, particularly to the CSSI Mission Statement
  • Practice professionalism and impartiality when handling sensitive personal information
  • Maintain confidentiality for business practices
  • Strict adherence to Health & Safety laws, policies, and procedures
  • Adhere to CSSI's work attire standards
  • Work in an organized manner where detail, accuracy, and confidentiality are critical
  • Attend meetings and committees when required
  • Work with members of the College to build strong relationships between CSSI and Conestoga College
  • Mandatory attendance at monthly staff meetings and CSSI-related training days
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be available to work up to 40 hours per week on days, evenings, and weekends as required
  • Food Handler's Certificate is a great asset but not required
  • Must have and show proof of Smart Serve Certification
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs as required on a semi-regular basis
  • Candidates will be asked to demonstrate the following:
    • Deep understanding of best practices in cooking and food preparation
    • Understanding of CSSI's food services
    • Comprehension of instructions and information relating to CSSI's food services
    • Customer service skills
    • Cultural competence
    • Familiarity with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)
    • Highly organized and skilled time management in handling multiple simultaneous priorities
