- Operate heavy equipment safely and productively on deep utility and civil construction projects, including remote and high-production sites.
- Install deep underground utilities such as water mains, storm systems, sanitary sewer, underground telecom infrastructure, and utility crossings.
- Run excavators, loaders, dozers, packers, skid steers, rock trucks, and related equipment to complete trenching, bedding, backfilling, and grading.
- Read and interpret utility drawings, grade stakes, and construction plans to dig to correct line and grade the first time.
- Work around existing underground utilities and congested infrastructure while maintaining strict excavation and trench safety procedures.
- Complete daily equipment inspections, basic preventative maintenance, and report issues to keep machines in reliable working order.
- Coordinate closely with supervisors, grade crews, pipe crews, and subcontractors to maintain production schedules and a safe, organized site.
- Within the first 6 months, you are consistently digging to line and grade with minimal rework while meeting or exceeding daily production targets.
- You demonstrate safe operating habits, incident-free work, and strong understanding of trenching, shoring, and working around live utilities.
- Crew leads and supervisors rely on you to plan digs, anticipate challenges, and keep utility installations moving smoothly.
- You contribute to a positive crew culture by communicating clearly, helping solve problems on site, and taking ownership of your machine and work area.
- Minimum 3 years of experience operating heavy equipment on deep utility or civil construction projects, including underground utility installation.
- Strong knowledge of excavation safety, trenching practices, and working around live utilities in urban or congested environments.
- Ability to read construction drawings, follow grade stakes, and understand elevations to achieve accurate excavations.
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence; Class 1 or 3 is an asset, as is experience with large diameter pipe, shoring systems, GPS machine control, and high-production civil or telecom projects.
- Comfort working outdoors in varying weather, travelling within Alberta as required, and collaborating with a field-based construction team.
