Job Details:
This role is responsible for delivering practical, compliant mechanical designs across the full project lifecycle from concept development through fabrication, testing, and commissioning. The position requires a strong balance of engineering design expertise and hands-on fabrication awareness, working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure successful project execution.
Responsibilities
- Design custom equipment, including pressure vessels, piping systems, and skid-mounted process equipment
- Interpret client specifications, contracts, and technical requirements
- Prepare and review engineering calculations, drawings, and technical documentation
- Support or perform stress, thermal, and vibration analysis as required
- Ensure designs comply with relevant industry standards, including:
- ASME Section VIII
- ASME B31.3
- CSA and applicable regulatory codes
- Work closely with drafting teams to produce fabrication drawings and BOMs
- Partner with project management to align with scope, schedule, and budget
- Support vendor selection and technical bid evaluations
- Participate in design reviews, P&IDs, and risk assessments (e.g., HAZOPs)
- Provide technical support to the shop and production teams
- Resolve design-related issues during fabrication
- Ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and aligned with shop capabilities
- Support projects through fabrication, testing, commissioning, and field activities as required
- Contribute to process improvements, design standardization, and product development initiatives
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility in Alberta
- 5-10 years of experience in custom manufacturing or ETO environments
- Experience in energy, industrial, or heavy manufacturing sectors preferred
- Design of pressure vessels, piping systems, and process equipment
- Strong understanding of ASME and CSA codes and standards
- Experience supporting fabrication and production teams
- Familiarity with P&IDs and modular/skid-based systems
- Exposure to engineering tools such as ANSYS, CAESAR II, or similar (asset)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a project-based environment
- Effective communication and cross-functional collaboration
- Practical, hands-on engineering approach
- Based in Calgary, with time split between office and active fabrication environment
- Exposure to typical industrial shop conditions (noise, heat, equipment)
- Occasional travel for client meetings, vendor visits, or site support
- Deliver accurate, compliant, and manufacturable designs
- Act as a key technical resource across engineering and production
- Build strong relationships with the shop and project teams
- Perform effectively in a fast-paced, custom project environment
