The Role

An established organization is seeking a detail-oriented and adaptable Payroll Specialist to support its ongoing growth. This position is ideal for someone with intermediate-level experience in full-cycle payroll administration. The role reports to the Director of Finance and offers a salary range of $70,000–$80,000 annually.

Responsibilities

  • Process biweekly payroll accurately and on time, including updating and verifying payroll data, managing internal status changes, processing terminations, and completing manual adjustments.
  • Handle year-end payroll activities, including the preparation and processing of T4s.
  • Collaborate with HR to prepare reports required by external stakeholders such as unions and benefits providers.
  • Liaise with pension plan providers to ensure compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Review and confirm the accuracy of employee timesheets in alignment with work schedules.
  • Issue Records of Employment (ROEs) and track interruptions in employee earnings.
  • Maintain compliance with legislation, best practices, and evolving payroll standards.
  • Support the accounting and finance team with ad hoc duties such as accounts payable or rent reconciliation.

Requirements

  • A related degree or diploma in payroll or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • PCP designation from the National Payroll Institute (highly preferred).
  • Strong preference for candidates with experience using Payworks.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Collective Agreements, the Municipal Pension Plan, and group benefits.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive payroll administration experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and multitasking ability.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word), Google Suite, and Adobe PDF tools.
  • Demonstrated judgment, discretion, and commitment to confidentiality.
  • Adaptable, proactive, and able to take initiative.
  • Self-starter with a positive attitude; able to work independently and collaboratively.
