Huronia Transition Homes is a non-profit organization working to end all violence against all women. We operate five primary programs, including La Maison Rosewood Shelter, a woman-centered organization that provides support to women who are fleeing violence, or are experiencing homelessness. We are committed to providing our services within an intersectional feminist and harm reduction integrated environment.
Huronia Transition Homes is currently seeking a dynamic individual to join our team as a permanent, full-time Legal Advocate. Integrating an intersectional feminist framework and a harm reduction philosophy, the Legal Advocate is responsible for advancing the mission of HURONIA TRANSITION HOMES by providing support, advocacy and system navigation to women who are survivors of violence and sexual assault as they contemplate and engage the justice system and other applicable institutions. This service is offered County-wide to women across Simcoe County.
Responsibilities:
- Work from an intersectional feminism and harm reduction approach in all service delivery;
- Provide individual, supportive legal advocacy to women in the community and in the shelter who have experienced abuse;
- Establish a safe, supportive and non-judgmental environment to facilitate womens empowerment and ability to make change;
- Provide support and advocacy to women as they navigate the justice system, including accessing Legal Aid, Advice Lawyers, Mediation and Criminal Injuries Compensation Board;
- Assist women in understanding and completing paperwork and forms relevant to CICB and the justice system;
- Provide solution-focused, short-term counselling to women in preparation for court and Human Rights Hearings;
- Provide support and accompaniment to women attending CAS appointments, child protection hearings and/ or emergency custody of children court hearings;
- Assist women in making connections with community resources including housing, social assistance, medical services, and basic needs resources;
- Provide transportation and accompaniment to appointments as necessary;
- Accurately track data/ statistics as per agency policies and procedures;
- Work collaboratively as a member of the service team and as a member of the organization;
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary degree/diploma in a relevant discipline required, and a minimum of 3 to 5 years relevant work experience;
- Solid and demonstrated commitment to antiracism/anti-oppression, harm reduction and intersectional feminism, and the ability to articulate each competently;
- An understanding of, and an ability to work with, diverse women including women from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds;
- Ability to establish a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment to facilitate womens empowerment and ability to make change;
- Knowledge of local community resources such as housing, social services, medical systems, and familiarity with procedures for access;
- Ability to provide information, support, practical assistance, safety planning, resources, referrals and advocacy for women as needed;
- Strong assessment and counselling skills;
- Strong understanding of the Canadian Justice System;
- Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills;
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills;
- Tact, sound judgment, and multi-tasking abilities;
- Ability to work independently and participate as a team member;
- Proficiency in the use of computers for word processing, databases, spreadsheets, email and internet;
- Communication skills in French or another language would be an asset.
- Flexibility and willingness to travel within Simcoe County, valid drivers license, and reliable vehicle.
