How You Will Make an Impact

The Child and Youth Worker role in community services is essential, blending compassion with adaptability and organizational prowess. Focused on direct interaction with children and youth in emergency shelters, it demands skill in fostering strong community relations and executing structured programs. The position calls for empathy, patience, and the ability to mentor, aimed at creating a stable, nurturing environment for young residents.

Responsibilities extend from maintaining the shelter's cleanliness and safety to active participation in daily operations and crisis management. Candidates must excel in multitasking, effective communication, and thorough case management, emphasizing a detail-oriented and versatile approach to support healing and growth in a challenging setting.


What You'll Bring to Our Team

  • Post-secondary education in Child and Youth Care or a related field is required
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar capacity
  • Preferred prior knowledgeable of and experience working with a range of issues impacting children including homelessness, violence against women and children, immigration,
  • poverty, developmental needs, parenting, behavior management, mental illness and harm reduction
  • Knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act
  • Demonstrated experience in handling challenges as it relates to conflict and de-escalation
  • Experience in developing, implementing and evaluating individual and group programming
  • Skill in effective crisis management and the ability to communicate effectively and establish relationships with clients and team members
  • Demonstrated verbal presentation and written skills combined with the ability to work cooperatively negotiate effectively and facilitate teamwork with a variety of professionals
  • Fluency in a 2nd language is an asset
  • CPR certification or willingness to be certified is required
  • Food Handling certificate or willingness to be certified is required
  • Evidence of self-motivation, enthusiasm, and flexibility
