About the Position:

The Language Assessor provides (in person and remote) services to newcomer clients including completing intake and assessments of language support needs. This role provides referrals to LINC programs as well as maintain client files and referral records. This role provides administrative support as needed and attends workshops/trainings/conferences/staff meetings as required. The language assessor inputs client information into databases and prepares narrative and statistical reports.

Reports to: Program Manager

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Support the language assessment and referral services model and ensure maintenance of the operating standards and protocols
  • Screen clients for eligibility for language training programs based on immigration status, age and learning history
  • Administer Canadian Language Benchmarks assessment tools according to principles outlined in the initial training and according to the funder policies and standards
  • Ensure clients are advised on all appropriate language training options that meet their needs, goals and preferences Provide language needs assessment information to clients
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date client files and documentation using OCMS
  • Prepare and submit statistics and program reports, as required, in a timely manner Provide referrals/ placement of clients to appropriate programs through established procedures
  • Maintain regular contact with language training providers and other community partners thereby sharing program information with all stakeholders in a timely manner
  • Make appropriate referrals to in-house programs and services
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development training sessions as required
  • Ensure a consistent, warm and welcoming approach to the reception of all clients
  • Report sensitive situations and issues to the supervisor in a timely manner, providing unbiased, detailed background to inform positive consultation
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education is an asset
  • Training and/or certification in the CLB-LPT, ELTPA and/or WLA is an asset
  • CLBA/CLBPA and/or CLBPT trained and certified would be preferred
  • TESL Canada and/or TESOL certificate or equivalent certification
  • Minimum of 600 hours English Language teaching experience
  • Minimum of 1 year adult teaching experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the process of second language acquisition
  • Demonstrated assessment/interviewing experience in the Adult Education field
  • Experience in settlement/adaptation services is an asset Experience in the social services sector is an asset
  • Experience with multicultural clientele and immigrant related services
  • Knowledge of community resources for newcomers to Canada
  • Knowledge of CLB-based language programs (ELSA/LINC)
  • Knowledge of basic principles of classroom crisis management

Job Skill and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Additional languages are considered an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent technical skills in MS Office, online learning platforms and web-based applications
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Ability to partake in continual professional development
