Our SkyForest team, specializing in technologies tailored for forestry applications, including wildfire monitoring, forest carbon assessment, and tracking tree growth, is seeking an exceptional Senior Earth Observation Scientist to join our crew!

As a Senior Earth Observation Scientist, you will be responsible for leading the development of a machine learning model for wildfire risk. This role requires an innovator with extensive experience as an EO scientist and a keen ability to apply EO data creatively for fresh insights into forests and wildfire risk.

As a Senior Earth Observation Scientist, you will be joining a dynamic team to guide development efforts, advancing our environmental monitoring capabilities and impactful projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop machine learning models related to wildfire and forest fires based on Earth Observation data
  • Utilize advanced remote sensing techniques to process and analyze multispectral time-series of optical data and synthetic aperture radar data for comprehensive monitoring
  • Develop and implement cutting edge algorithms for feature extraction, classification, and change detection, extracting meaningful insights from Earth observation data
  • Lead the seamless integration of optical and SAR data to provide a holistic understanding of forest structure, health, and dynamics
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and execute research projects aimed at addressing environmental challenges
  • Stay at the forefront of the latest developments in Earth observation technologies, actively contributing to the continuous improvement of our methodologies
  • Additional duties as assigned

YOUR PAST MISSIONS (AKA Experience)
  • Master's degree or equivalent in Remote Sensing, Geospatial Science, Physical Geography, or a related field
  • Proven innovation experience in remote sensing of ecological systems
  • Machine Learning experience with models trained on SAR and optical satellite data. Some expertise in ML pipelines, including creating models, cleaning data, A/B testing, the ability to test a model to see if it works, understanding explainable AI and some theoretical understanding of the basis of the models

YOUR TOOLKIT (AKA Skills and Knowledge)
  • Expertise in optical and SAR, image processing, pattern recognition, image classification and feature extraction, application of statistical methods for spatial analysis
  • Strong proficiency in remote sensing software (e.g., ENVI, ArcGIS) and programming languages including Python for image processing and analysis and proficiency in R programming
  • Expertise in developing and implementing algorithms for change detection.

YOUR COMPENSATION
Base Salary Range: $120,000-$140,000 CAD annually
The compensation range provided is determined by several factors, including job-related skills, experience, training, education, location, and business needs. This range reflects market data for Vancouver, BC and surrounding regions. Consideration for compensation at a higher end of the range will be given only to candidates who demonstrate exceptional qualifications and a proven track record of success relative to the position.

Hours of work typically fall between 9:00am and 5:30pm Monday to Friday with periodic cross-over work required with other team members across a few times zones in addition to occasional evening and weekend work.
