ABOUT THE ROLE
The Senior Materials Manager is a strategic leadership role responsible for the sourcing, planning, and procurement of steel and related materials essential to our custom manufacturing operations. This role requires deep experience in steel mill buying and coil product procurement and plays a critical role in ensuring our supply chain supports production demands, cost efficiency, and business continuity.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
The Senior Materials Manager is responsible for the end-to-end planning, procurement, inventory control, and distribution of materials, with a specialized focus on steel and mill-direct sourcing. This role ensures the right materials are available at the right time and in the right quantitieswhile optimizing cost, improving lead times, and supporting high-quality customer delivery.
- Lead the development and execution of steel sourcing strategies, including mill-direct buying of coil, plate, and structural steel products.
- Maintain strong, strategic partnerships with steel mills, coil processors, and service centers to ensure consistent supply, competitive pricing, and long-term reliability.
- Develop and maintain strong supplier relationships, drive continuous improvement, and ensure alignment with production schedules and business objectives.
- Analyze market trends, global supply conditions, and steel pricing dynamics to proactively adjust purchasing strategies.
- Maintain a deep understanding of the steel market and market forces affecting our suppliers and supply chain.
- Lead and collaborate closely with all members of the purchasing team, including the Purchasing Leader, Purchasing Agent, Purchasing Associate, and Receiving Coordinator.

- Develop, negotiate, and execute operational and procurement strategies aligned with the company's overall goals and objectives.
- Identify opportunities for cost optimization and material efficiency enhancements.
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate material efficiencies and drive strategic decision-making.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to align material purchases with sales, engineering, project management, and production functions to meet customer demands and achieve business targets.
- Develop and implement risk management and business continuity plans to mitigate material disruptions.
- Ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards.
- Drive sustainability initiatives to minimize the organization's environmental impact while maximizing resource efficiency.
- Build and maintain relationships with suppliers, vendors, and partners to ensure seamless supply chain operations.
- Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to drive innovation within the operations department.
- Drive procurement excellence through contract negotiation, demand forecasting, and risk mitigation specific to volatile steel markets.
- Lead, implement, and maintain ERP system and departmental processes for Purchasing, Inventory, and Receiving (e.g., cycle counting, month-end activities, and reconciliation).
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
- 10+ years of experience sourcing steel materials directly from mills, with proven ability to manage relationships with coil, plate, and structural steel suppliers.
- Experience in a relevant industry, such as custom manufacturing or metals/steel supply chains, with a focus on mill-direct procurement.
- Proven success negotiating mill-direct contracts and managing long-lead steel procurement cycles.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze steel market trends, raw material indices (e.g., CRU), and supplier performance to inform purchasing decisions.
- Proven track record of success in optimizing operations, driving process improvements, and achieving strategic goals.
- Strong financial acumen and budget management experience.
- Skilled in cost analysis, material forecasting, and implementation of efficiency improvements.
- Proficient in vendor negotiations and supply chain risk management.
- Experienced in custom manufacturing for versatile customer needs.
- Knowledgeable in capital investment planning and resource allocation.
- Proficient in ERP and MRP systems for resource management, inventory control, and reporting.
- Bachelors degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, or a related field.
