Position: Refrigeration B Operator

Position Reports To: Site Engineer

Position Overview

The Refrigeration Operator – Class B TSSA is responsible for operating, trouble-shooting, repairing, defrosting and maintaining the production Ammonia and Freon refrigeration system equipment in accordance with established processes and practices and for complying with internal and external environmental and health & safety requirements. In addition, this individual is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the mechanical equipment within the site, including heating control and air conditioning units, as well as general maintenance of the buildings and premises on the site. Reporting to the Site Engineer, and working closely both with leaders and employees of the various businesses within the site, the Shift Engineer maintains the premises in good working order and documents all work performed in the daily logs.

Major Responsibilities

  1. Regular and Preventative Maintenance: Is responsible for regular and preventative maintenance on aging equipment to sustain the operations of 2 different businesses operating on the premises. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
    • Operate the Ammonia and Freon refrigeration systems as outlined in the TSSA regulations
    • Conduct facility inspections on a regular basis, record observations, ensure readings on instruments and gauges comply with regulations, operating procedures and occupational health and safety standards.
    • Diagnose machinery and equipment to detect and investigate irregularities and malfunctions
    • Provide routine maintenance support for other non-refrigerated building mechanical devices, such as air compressors, condensers, electrical motors, fans, etc. by changing belts and pulleys, locating source of malfunctions and performing repairs as needed
    • Clean coils, install and maintain air filtration systems
    • Make various adjustments on electric and pneumatic control systems
  2. Daily Defrosts: Performs daily manual defrosts to augment the automatic process.
  3. Reporting: Accurately maintains various logs for TSSA inspection and reports major findings to Site Engineer as they occur.
  4. Organization: Keep all mechanical equipment, rooms and tools clean and orderly. Use proper personal protective equipment at all times.
  5. Site Maintenance: Routinely answers calls for temperature checks and adjustments. Assists in general repairs to the extent possible, such as fixing freezer doors, changing light bulbs in the offices, minor electrical or plumbing work, shoveling or salting the walkways.
  6. Back Up: Is accountable for covering all duties when the Site Engineer is away.
  7. Safety: Follow all Health and Safety and Food Safety / GMPs. Ensures that the Site Engineer and Health & Safety Coordinator are briefed on any Health & Safety incidents.
  8. Performs other related duties as assigned, and initiates recommendations to further enhance the company's recognition as a top employer.

Key Success Measures

  • There is zero production down time related to the refrigeration or HVAC units or other mechanical systems under your control
  • Site is operational and safe and conforms to TSSA regulations
  • All records are accurate and maintained to standards

Qualifications & Considerations for the Position

  • Class B Refrigeration Operator or Operating Engineer 3rd Class (TSSA)
  • University or technical college certificate in a related field
  • Minimum 3 years related experience
  • Mechanical aptitude to do general repairs as needed
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety and Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) legislation as it relates to working in an Ammonia and Freon refrigeration plant
  • Organized self-starter with proven ability to manage and effectively follow up on multiple projects and assignments and meet all deadlines
  • Excellent observational skills with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Able to collect, maintain, evaluate data, summarize and write reports, and recommend continuous improvement
  • Strong trouble-shooting and decision-making ability
  • Ability to work in a cold temperature (-18 degrees) environment, with proper PPE
  • Ability to sit, stand, crouch, bend and reach for extended periods of time
  • Manual dexterity and ability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Willing to work rotating shifts and weekends
  • Work with minimal supervision, and keep team members apprised of issues
  • Able to work well under pressure while maintaining professionalism at all times
  • Experience working in the food industry and working with manufacturing equipment a strong asset
