Position Summary:

We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Controller to lead the financial operations of our pulp manufacturing company. This role is ideal for a proactive finance leader who thrives in a dynamic, production-driven environment and brings both strategic insight and operational discipline to a mid-sized business. The Controller will oversee accounting, reporting, budgeting, cash flow, compliance, and internal controls to support effective decision-making and sustainable growth.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Reporting & Accounting

  • Manage all day-to-day accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, inventory accounting, and cost accounting.
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with ASPE (or IFRS, as applicable).
  • Maintain the chart of accounts and oversee the integrity of financial records.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and coordinate forecasting updates throughout the year.
  • Analyze variances between actual and budgeted results; provide actionable insights and recommendations to management.

Cost & Inventory Accounting

  • Oversee product costing, bill of materials, and standard cost updates.
  • Monitor inventory levels, reconciliations, and cost of goods sold reporting.
  • Support operational leaders in margin analysis and efficiency improvements.

Cash Flow & Treasury

  • Monitor daily cash position and manage working capital needs.
  • Prepare weekly/monthly cash flow forecasts.
  • Oversee banking relationships and support financing/lending requirements.

Compliance & Controls

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory filings (e.g., tax, payroll, HST, WSIB, etc.).
  • Maintain internal control procedures and ensure proper segregation of duties.
  • Coordinate year-end audit and liaise with external auditors.

Leadership & Systems

  • Supervise accounting staff (if applicable) and provide coaching, development, and performance feedback.
  • Lead the implementation or improvement of ERP/accounting systems and automation initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • CPA designation (CA, CMA, or CGA) required.
  • Minimum 57 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, preferably in manufacturing.
  • Strong knowledge of cost accounting, inventory systems, and Canadian GAAP (ASPE).
  • Proficiency with ERP systems (especially Netsuite) and advanced Excel skills.
  • Hands-on, self-starter approach with a high degree of integrity and accuracy.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with operations, sales, and executive leadership.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience in pulp or heavy industrial sectors.
  • Experience with capital project accounting and grant reporting (if applicable).
