Job DescriptionJob Purpose
To provide, complete, and be responsible for carrying out synthetic projects in the lab and contribute to a safe working environment. Keep an accurate record of all work with an eye to reproducibility and recording of costs.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and organize equipment and reactions so they operate in a safe manner
- Plan, develop and troubleshoot complex multi-step syntheses
- Expert knowledge in carrying out a wide variety of organic laboratory techniques including, but not limited to, water and oxygen sensitive chemistry, microscale manipulations, modern organometallic synthetic methods
- Experience in the extraction of natural products and/or photochemistry would be an asset
- The ability to characterize products of complex structure by independent interpretation of spectral data
- Perform process development and research
- Develop methods for separating complex mixtures and using fundamental techniques and advanced purification techniques such as ion-exchange chromatography, reverse-phase chromatography, and automated purification methods
- Ability to work on several different projects of varying lengths and complexity

Education Requirements
- PhD or equivalent experience in synthetic organic chemistry
- Have a competent knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry, reagents and common laboratory techniques

- Self-starter: task oriented with ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously
- Flexible and adaptable to changing deadlines and modifications to workflow and expectations
- High-level knowledge of organic reactions and their mechanisms
- Strong ability to search chemical literature with SciFinder and other resources
- Current valid Canadian work permit is mandatory

- Work closely with Lab Supervisor and other members of the chemistry production team to resolve technical with Projects
- Work with Finished Goods & Logistics team and Receiving regarding materials.
- Work with Analytical team regarding product testing
- Work with Maintenance & Facilities Department regarding equipment issues
- Work with Human Resources Department regarding personnel issues and HR policies
- Work with Environmental Health & Safety Department regarding environmental, health and safety issues and policies
