RHF is accepting applications for volunteers between the ages of 13 30 for the Youth Leadership Committee (YLC), with the Rick Hansen Foundation School Program (RHFSP).
Purpose
The purpose of the Committee is to support the professional growth and advancement of youth through the provision of a voluntary, mentorship program. Professional growth includes the development of soft skills such as public speaking, record keeping, time management, conflict resolution and emotional intelligence.
Term
September 2025 - August 2026 (one year term)
Time commitment
Members commit to a 1 hour meeting per month, and approximately 1-2 hours of project work per month.
Membership
Youth between the ages of 13-30 inclusive and living in Canada wishing to join the Committee must first submit an application form (see details and link below). Applications are assessed by Committee members according to the Terms of Reference and voted on by Committee members. The Committee includes a maximum of nine (9) Members with a Committee Chair, Vice Chair, and Rotating Meeting Secretary. The majority (over 50%) of Committee members must be youth living with a physical disability.
Volunteer Responsibilities
- Attend an intake summary meeting;
- Attend regular meetings, and contribute to the agenda and meeting discussion;
- Review and provide feedback on meeting minutes, work plan and performance reports;
- Review RHFSP Difference Maker Award nominations;
- Complete the annual reporting survey;
- Ensure two members are present for the annual report presentation;
- Protect the privacy of individuals with respect to personal information;
- Review and vote on applications for membership;
- Sign up for the Rotating Secretary position; and
- Take proactive steps to mitigate real or perceived conflicts of interest.
Volunteer Qualifications
- Must be aged 13-30 inclusive;
- Must currently reside in Canada;
- Demonstrate an ability to constructively participate in a fair and open-minded manner;
- Demonstrate an ability to consider a broad range of views that reflect the diversity of their local community(ies);
- Possess a good knowledge and understanding of issues that are relevant to youth with disabilities;
- Demonstrate an ability to facilitate communication and engagement with youth;
- Show a willingness to celebrate the success and achievements of youth with disabilities; and
- Possess the capacity to commit for the required duration.
Please note, all YLC members are required to undergo a vulnerable sector background check.
