Position Overview:

The Directional Driller is responsible for overseeing and conducting directional drilling activities through trenchless methods. This role ensures accurate and efficient drilling operations while adhering to safety protocols.
Please note: This is a unionized position.

Directional Drilling Responsibilities:

  • Review project specifications, engineering plans, and survey data to understand drilling requirements and objectives.
  • Plan and design drilling paths, considering underground utilities, soil conditions, and project specifications.
  • Operate directional drilling equipment, including drill rigs such as Vermeer and Ditch Witch models.
  • Monitor drilling progress and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper direction, depth, and alignment of the borehole.
  • Coordinate with surveyors and utility locators to verify the location and alignment of underground utilities and avoid potential conflicts during drilling operations.
  • Utilize various drilling techniques, such as mud motor drilling or rotary steerable drilling, to achieve desired borehole characteristics.
  • Perform calculations and use computer software to analyze drilling parameters, such as weight on bit (WOB), torque, and drilling fluid flow rates.
  • Implement and maintain safety protocols and procedures, including personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to drilling safety regulations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve drilling issues or equipment malfunctions to minimize downtime and maintain project schedules.
  • Maintain accurate records of drilling activities, including drilling reports, equipment maintenance logs, and any deviations from project plans.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid AZ drivers license with a clean abstract.
  • Proven experience operating directional drilling equipment, including Ditch Witch and Vermeer drills.
  • Strong knowledge of directional drilling techniques and safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with electronic locating equipment, such as electromagnetic locators and ground-penetrating radar (GPR).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, survey data, and project specifications.
  • Strong mathematical skills for calculations and analysis of drilling parameters.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to perform manual labor in various weather conditions.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage project documentation and maintain accurate records.
  • Willingness to travel to various job sites as required.
