Job Description

Reporting to the Clinical Services Manager/Professional Practice Leader of Respiratory Therapy, the Pulmonary Function Technologist is responsible for ensuring timely, accurate and reproducible measurements of lung function tests. Tests include Spirometry, DLCO, Body Plethysmography, MIPs, MEPs and broncho-provocation challenge testing. Home oxygen assessment and oximetry with exercise will also be performed. The technologist also provides patient family education related to the tests being performed.

Duties will include performing daily equipment calibration, quality control and maintenance as well as maintain documentation by ensuring reports, patient records and workload statistics are complete and accurate. Participate in quality improvement activities by providing input on the development, implementation and evaluation of program goals, objectives, clinical indicators, policies and procedures to ensure effective resource utilization and quality patient care. Maintain knowledge of current developments in home oxygen therapy and pulmonary function testing and act as a resource to other health care providers in the areas of pulmonary diagnostics and community home oxygen and respiratory services. Responsible for orientation and training of students and new staff. Participate in gathering data for research within the Respiratory Therapy Department. Areas of responsibility may change according to the needs of the service.

Accountabilities:

  • Perform diagnostic testing on the adult and paediatric patients. Tests include: spirometry, DLCO, body plethysmography, MIPs, MEPs, broncho-provocation challenge and exercise challenge
  • Perform home oxygen assessments: procure ABGs, perform exercise oximetry/six minute walk tests and independent exercise assessments
  • Receive and transcribe verbal orders
  • Patient education:
    • Provide education and support to adult and paediatric patients, their families and caregivers, using best practice guidelines
  • Student and new staff education:
    • Supervise/teach respiratory therapy students in their PFT rotations
    • Demonstrate effective oral, written and non-verbal communication skills to work productively with patients, staff and co-workers
    • Evaluate the knowledge and performance of students in order to complete performance reports
    • Orientate new staff
  • Collaboration and consultation:
    • Consult with health care professionals regarding patients respiratory care needs and subsidy approval
    • Receive and transcribe verbal orders
  • Indirect patient care:
    • Perform equipment quality control and maintenance
    • Collect and provide workload measurement statistics and quality indicator data
    • Participate and contribute to PFT staff/group meetings
    • Continuing education
    • Maintain supply inventory, ensure all inventory is ordered as needed to ensure smooth operation of the PFT Lab
  • Delivery of inhaled medications:
    • Administer medical gases and medicated aerosol therapy to test for, manage and control respiratory related illnesses
    • Provide, titrate medical gas therapy (oxygen) using appropriate modality
    • Administer substances by inhalation
    • Assess and recognize efficacy and side effects of medication
  • Patient assessment (adult and paediatric):
    • Conduct a comprehensive patient history
    • Interpret relevant diagnostic testing – pulmonary function tests; broncho-provocation and exercise challenge tests; oximetry; arterial blood gases and independent exercise assessments
Qualifications
  • Focused knowledge and specific technical skills regarding the following: full pulmonary function testing, broncho-provocation and exercise challenge testing, arterial blood gas procurement, home oxygen assessment and oximetry testing
  • Registered with Canadian Association of Cardio-Pulmonary Technologist required or Registered Respiratory Therapist with some experience in a pulmonary function lab
  • BCLS – required
  • Certified Respiratory Educator an asset
  • A combination of experience and qualifications may be considered
  • Through previous work experiences will have demonstrated a positive attitude and initiative
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Fluent in English (comprehension, reading, writing, and speaking)
  • Computer literacy and skill in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
  • Required to work and travel between all Osler sites
  • Excellent attendance, punctuality and work record

Additional Information

Hours: Currently Days 8 hours shifts including weekends and statutory holidays (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)

SALARY:
Minimum: $33.50 per hour
Maximum: $45.90 per hour
