Job Overview:

The Ophthalmic Technician will be an essential member of a collaborative and patient-focused team. This role requires the technician to support physicians by conducting diagnostic tests, assisting with surgeries, scribing patient information, and delivering excellent customer service.

Responsibilities May Include (but are not limited to):

  • Testing performing and providing detailed instructions on various tests including optical coherence tomography, visual field, autorefractor, corneal topography, a-scan and pentacam testing
  • Preparation turning on machines and lanes, ensuring all supplies are stocked as per doctor preference
  • Patients testing, working up patients, and scribing for the ophthalmologists
  • Laser Clinic preparing laser room and machine, providing assistance when necessary
  • Paperwork populating pre-dictated surgical notes for eyelids and cataracts and lasers
  • Assist in eyelid and cataract surgery preparing and assisting during the procedure
  • Filing and scanning - slips, consents, etc
  • Housekeeping keeping testing rooms clean and tidy
  • Obtaining ocular and systemic history, including visual acuities, intraocular pressures, assessing pupils, ensuring testing was performed and ready for doctor to review
  • Administering drops as per doctor preference
  • Organizing medication refills under the supervision of the physician
  • Promoting product sales and helping to reach department targets

Clinic-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Opening and preparing clinic for clinic days
  • Upkeeping of machines and diagnostic areas
  • Preparing slips in advance of clinic days

Experience (2-3 years preferred):

  • Knowledge of medical and ophthalmic terminology
  • Typing speed of at least 60 WPM with minimum 90% accuracy
  • Experience in ophthalmic procedures and equipment operation
