In this role, as a Service Technician, you will be responsible for the successful start-up, commissioning, and continuous field support of Armstrongs advanced fluid-flow and automation systems. You will work with a wide range of productsincluding pumps, boosters, control panels, and automation systemswhile leveraging modern diagnostic tools, mobile field service management software, and robust safety protocols to deliver exceptional customer service and technical excellence.

Key Accountabilities

Field Service Activities

  • System Installation and Commissioning: Execute hands-on field service for the start-up and commissioning of Armstrong equipment, with a focus on systems integrating Variable Frequency Drives and advanced Control Panels. Ensure that all installations are executed in accordance with engineering specifications and industry best practices.
  • Diagnostics and Repairs: Troubleshoot and repair both electrical and mechanical faults in Armstrong equipment using advanced diagnostic tools, technical manuals, and real-time data analysis. Resolve issues promptly to minimize downtime and ensure system reliability.
  • Parts and Labor Planning: Prepare detailed parts lists and accurately determine labor requirements for repairs. Collaborate with inventory and procurement teams to ensure timely availability of components.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Complete comprehensive daily reports of services, start-ups, and commissioning activities via the Armstrong online portal. Maintain meticulous records to support operational transparency and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Operator Training: Deliver on-site training to operators following customer acceptance. Provide detailed instructions on system operation, routine maintenance, and basic troubleshooting to ensure long-term performance and safety.
  • Issue Escalation: Report complex field service issues to the Armstrong After Sales service team and implement their recommended troubleshooting steps, ensuring a collaborative and streamlined problem-resolution process.
  • Travel and Time Management: Manage extensive travel requirements across designated service regions, ensuring punctual and efficient responses to service calls. Log all work hours and activities accurately using the activity tracker.

Customer Service Activities

  • Customer Engagement: Act as the primary point of contact for regional customer complaints, service issues, and start-up requests. Respond to calls and emails promptly, ensuring that all customer interactions reflect Armstrongs commitment to quality service.
  • On-Call Support: Participate in a structured on-call rotation to address urgent service issues. Maintain detailed logs of service calls, resolutions, and follow-up actions, and submit comprehensive reports to the Service Manager at the end of each on-call period.

Training

  • Technical Training: Conduct occasional training sessions for service and installation teams at contracting firms. Focus on practical demonstrations, safety protocols, and best practices to minimize warranty-related issues.
  • Contractor Education: Provide targeted training for installation personnel at mechanical contractor offices on the proper use and maintenance of Armstrong products.
  • Data Analysis: Compile and review site commissioning, start-up, and warranty field reports. Analyze these reports to identify trends and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Network Integration: Assist in integrating select site equipment with the Internet or customer networks, enhancing remote monitoring and diagnostic capabilities.

Technical Support

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Liaise with engineering, technical support, project management, sales, and marketing teams to provide critical field insights that drive product development and project-specific initiatives.
  • Quality Improvement: Identify and report product deficiencies based on field observations, contributing to ongoing quality assurance and product enhancement efforts.
  • Process Optimization: Actively contributes to process improvements and product design enhancements by sharing detailed feedback and collaborating on solutions that expand service capabilities and improve overall operational efficiency.

What Were Looking For

Education and Experience

  • A college degree or designation in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Applied Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent technical work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with drives, control panels, Building Automation Systems (BAS), and automation technologies; familiarity with serial communications protocols is an asset.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in field service or a related position.
  • Proven hands-on experience with mechanical pumps and HVAC industry equipment, with the ability to manage both routine maintenance and emergency repairs.
  • Prior exposure to the commercial construction marketplace is desirable, offering insights into large-scale system integrations.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and industry-specific software for diagnostics, reporting, and inventory management.
  • Strong comprehension of electrical and mechanical systems, with the ability to interpret technical schematics, wiring diagrams, and engineering specifications.
  • In-depth knowledge of Variable Frequency Drives, Building Automation Controls, pump curves, and thermo-hydraulic principles, along with familiarity in internet and communication protocols essential for modern diagnostic systems.
