ABOUT HELCIM

Helcim was founded with a mission at heart: to be the worlds most loved payment system. We believe that by offering small businesses in North America a decidedly human payment solution where it is easier to sign up and use while being transparent and affordable, we can empower them to grow and prosper. Simply put, helping small businesses thrive is at the very core of our business model, and we think thats a great way to do business.

From the very start, we knew that we wanted to be different from every payment processor out there. We want the merchants we serve to feel supported and see us as a trusted partner rather than simply just another cost of doing business. We are relentless in our pursuit to provide a radically transparent and honest payments solution that flat out saves business owners money, all while treating them like human beings.

THE POSITION

At Helcim, fraud prevention is about knowing when something's off and having the curiosity, creativity, and conviction to dig deeper. As a Fraud Specialist on our Trust & Safety team, you'll be a crucial shield, protecting Helcim and its merchants from fraud losses while enabling legitimate business growth.

You'll spend your days spotting red flags in merchant applications or payment batches, investigating unusual patterns, and directly contributing to a stronger, safer platform for everyone who uses it. This means protecting our users from malicious activity, ensuring a secure environment for legitimate businesses. You'll operate within a high-trust environment, empowered to work independently while adhering to established guidelines and processes.

As a core part of your role, you'll expertly manage crucial aspects like KYC (Know Your Customer) and KYB (Know Your Business) reviews, conduct AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and TF (Terrorist Financing) investigations, and enforce our AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) and TOS (Terms of Service).
At Helcim, we're payments people at our core. We know the difference between a mistake and a scheme, and we know how to handle both with clarity and integrity. If you're a curious, naturally skeptical investigator who thrives in a collaborative and high-autonomy setting, you'll find your fit here.

Here are the things youll own day to day:

  • Investigate Red Flags: Proactively review merchant applications and payment batches that trigger fraud red flags, digging into the details to understand what's truly going on and why, with a keen eye on KYC/KYB integrity.
  • Uncover Deception: Investigate behavior that suggests identity fraud, account manipulation, or financial crime, looking for the signal in the noise across transaction activity, website content, and business documentation. You'll go beyond the obvious, thinking like a fraudster to anticipate their next move and uncover hidden patterns.
  • Document & Escalate: Document findings thoroughly, flag high-risk activity, and escalate issues appropriately, including preparing internal reports and STRs/SARs when needed, aligning with AML/TF compliance.
  • Innovate & Enhance Systems: Work directly with product and engineering teams to continuously improve our fraud prevention systems and tools. You'll actively come up with new ideas, make a strong case for their prioritization, and then see them through to completion. You'll play a key role in developing the next great fraud detection mechanism and enhancing existing solutions to make a merchant's life easier and better with Helcim, contributing to the evolution of our fraud playbooks and frameworks. This isn't just about tweaking existing rules; it's about pioneering new ways to outsmart evolving threats.
  • Enforce Policies with Care: Uphold and enforce our policies, including the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and Terms of Service (TOS), with both confidence and care.
  • Educate & Protect: Educate merchants on how to reduce their fraud exposure and help them stay compliant, especially when they dont know theyre at risk. Remember that some merchants are new to payments, and they may need a helping hand to get started off on the right foot.
  • Communicate Proactively: While written communication is vital, you'll know when to pick up the phone to resolve complex situations, add a personal touch, or clarify issues more efficiently.
  • Adapt & Evolve: Continuously learn about new fraud typologies, emerging threats, and creative abuse. We evolve as fast as the fraudsters do, which means staying agile and thinking creatively to stay one step ahead.

A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

  • You've got 2+ years of experience in fraud prevention, trust & safety, AML investigations, or related risk work in a financial or fintech environment.
  • You're not afraid of messy, ambiguous cases, and you know how to stay level-headed and use sound judgment when there isn't a clear answer, aiming to discern intent.
  • You think in systems and patterns. Curious, skeptical, creative, and analytical are three words people might use to describe you.
  • You're a strong communicator, both in writing and verbally, and you can explain complex ideas clearly and constructively, providing effective guidance.
  • You're comfortable balancing urgency with impact, taking quick action when it counts, and taking your time when it matters.
  • You're collaborative, coachable, and committed to doing the right thing, even when it's hard, and you know how to ask good questions.
  • You thrive in an environment of quick, direct feedback, engaging in constant team discussions, brainstorming, and on-the-spot input to continuously sharpen our collective approach.
  • You have a strong understanding and practical experience with KYC, KYB, AML, TF, AUP, and TOS principles and their application in real-world investigations.
You embrace a culture of accountability and continuous improvement, owning your mistakes, learning from them, and participating constructively in post-mortems tostrengthen team processes.
  • You understand how Machine Learning can be leveraged to our benefit in fraud detection and prevention.

Creativity and Innovation

Fraudsters are constantly adapting their tactics, and so must we. This role demands a creative and inventive mindset to develop novel solutions and spot emerging threats. You'll be encouraged to:

  • Think outside the box when investigating suspicious activity, considering unconventional angles and connections.
  • Propose and prototype innovative fraud detection strategies that leverage data, technology, and your keen intuition.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, where new ideas are welcomed and explored to enhance our defensive capabilities.
  • Embrace the challenge of an ever-changing landscape, viewing each new fraud scheme as an opportunity to learn and innovate.

Not checking every box? Please apply anyway! We know that candidates have different experiences that may make them a great fit for this position and for Helcim. We believe that diversity and having an inclusive culture is not only the right thing, but key to our long-term success. Diversity brings more experience, view-points, knowledge and insight about our future. We also want to provide an accessible interview process, so if theres any accommodations that would make your experience more comfortable, please let us know.

BONUS POINTS

  • Experience with AML/TF reporting (e.g., STR/SAR).
  • In-depth knowledge of compliance regulations relevant to payments and financial services.
  • Experience in credit card processing and issuing, or general banking operations.
  • Proficiency with SQL, Metabase, or Python for data analysis and reporting.
  • Experience or strong interest in project management, especially related to risk or fraud systems.
  • Experience with chargebacks/disputes.
  • Experience reviewing ID documentation, banking statements, or business models for legitimacy.

HELCIM CULTURE IS;

Being builders: We build things ourselves and we build them well. We use technology and our creativity to overcome challenges that would seem beyond the capability of a company our size. We improve what is already there, invent our way out of problems and we never stop dreaming of better.

Choosing the harder path: We believe that the right decisions are usually the harder ones, so we embrace the challenge and endure when others quit. We choose what is difficult because it is more rewarding in the long-term, and makes us resilient, so that we not only survive but thrive.

Creating trust: We earn trust by striving to be our best selves every day and by lifting those around us. We recognize that trust is hard to earn, easy to lose and is tested continuously over time, so we make trust our way of life.

Contributing to a company of many: We are stronger because of our collective passion, diversity, and fellowship. We believe only great teams can accomplish great things, and we ask the very best of each other. Together we create our own future.
