The Opportunity
As the Asylum Seeker Resettlement Coordinator, you will play a vital role in supporting newly arrived asylum seekers as they begin their resettlement journey in Saint John.
This position provides leadership in the development, coordination, and delivery of resettlement services for asylum seekers, ensuring each person receives the immediate support, resources, and connections they need to begin building a stable life in Canada.
You will work closely with community partners, support service organizations, internal teams, and clients to coordinate accommodation, employment readiness, access to health and social services, and ongoing integration support. This full time 2 year contract position is based at the Saint John Regional Y and requires flexibility. Your regular work hours will vary Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m.6:00 p.m. with occasional weekend shifts to support clients
Responsibilities
- Coordinate all aspects of the Asylum Seeker resettlement program, including financial tracking, reporting, and project deliverables
- Act as the primary point of contact for newly arrived asylum seekers, coordinating immediate reception, orientation, and ongoing support
- Maintain close communication with hotel administration and property managers to ensure client accommodation needs are met
- Support client access to critical services including healthcare, legal aid, Social Development, Working NB, language training, and other community supports
- Conduct 1:1 intake assessments and coordinate settlement plans based on individual needs
- Oversee the transition from temporary to permanent housing, including lease support and landlord relations
- Collaborate with internal YMCA teams across settlement, employment, and community connections to ensure seamless support
- Submit weekly metrics and contribute to evaluation and reporting tools to monitor outcomes
- Represent the YMCA and the program in community committees, conferences, and stakeholder meetings
- Act as a Resettlement Counsellor when needed to support staffing coverage and client services
- Stay informed on immigration trends, INB goals, and trauma-informed care best practices
Skills and Qualifications.
- A Bachelor's Degree, Community College diploma or similar from an accredited institution
- 23 years experience working with vulnerable newcomer populations, particularly asylum seekers or refugees
- Strong understanding of Canadian immigration systems, including IRB and legal aid processes
- Proven experience in project management, community coordination, or client service roles
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care, housing navigation, and income assistance programs
- Familiarity with the Saint John community and its service provider landscape
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365; experience with KPI tracking and reporting
- Strong communication, mediation, and conflict resolution skills
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and manage sensitive or complex cases with discretion
- Fluent in English; knowledge of additional languages is an asset
- Client-focused mindset with a high level of professionalism and empath
