RYGIEL Supports for Community Living is currently recruiting for a part-time Summer Lifeguard.
Location: Onsite (Hamilton, ON)
Title: Summer Lifeguard – Temporary (ASAP - Sept 2025)
Hours: 10-20 hours per week (Non-Union, Temp. Part-Time)
Shifts: Tuesdays and Saturdays 10:00am-6:00pm.

Purpose of the Position:
The Summer Lifeguard will be responsible for maintaining the health, safety and well-being of the individuals using the pool and surrounding facilities. Your primary duty will involve surveillance of the designated area, promptly responding to any emergencies or signs of distress. You will also be responsible for enforcing safety regulations and administering first aid or CPR as required. Strong communication skills and the ability to work under pressure are essential skills for this role to ensure a safe environment.
The Summer Lifeguard will work in a manner which effectively models and reinforces RYGIEL's established Vision, Mission, Values, attitudes and standards of support.
JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILTIES:
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all persons in the pool or designated swimming areas.
  • Monitor and direct all persons in the designated lifeguard areas to ensure safety measures are being followed and to mitigate risks.
  • Address any emergency events with the utmost priority, while adhering to emergency, first-aid, and life-saving measure protocols.
  • Enforces safety rules and regulations to prevent accidents.
  • Makes rescues and administers first aid when necessary.
  • Reports and documents accidents and incidents to management as needed.
  • Inspects pool areas before and after opening/closing.
  • Maintains and ensures proper storage of all pool equipment.
  • Perform light cleaning duties such as tidying pool area, trash removal etc.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Background in aquatics, such as lifeguarding, instructing, or equivalent training.
  • Standard First Aid with CPR-C
  • Completion of National Lifeguard Course
  • Police Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Must be able to remain concentrated and alert to be able to identify signs of distress.
  • Must have excellent communication skills to clearly communicate safety rules and expectations.
  • Must be able to problem-solve and work under pressure in emergency situations.

WORKING HOURS & WORK ENVIORNMENT
  • Regular exposure to heat, humidity, and liquids in the pool area.
  • Exposure to fluctuating weather conditions, as it is an outdoor pool.
  • Working hours will be Tuesdays and Saturdays 10:00am-6:00pm.
SENSORY & PHYSICAL EFFORT
  • Must be able to exert strenuous effort in the case of a lifesaving event. This could include swimming and holding breath for extended periods of time, lifting and supporting the weight of an individual and other physical effort as needed.
  • Must be able to swim and tread water with ease.
  • May be required to perform various physical actions of mobility, i.e. lifting, standing, walking, reaching, climbing and bending.
  • Concentration and focus throughout the workday.
