Entry Level

A well-established construction firm is seeking a dedicated payroll specialist to manage weekly union payroll for approximately 200 field and office employees across multiple job sites in the Greater Toronto Area. You'll be the go-to resource for end-to-end payroll processing, compliance with collective agreements, and statutory reporting. The team is also preparing to implement a new payroll system within the first 90 days of hire, offering the chance to play a key role in that transition. What You'll Do
  • Process weekly payroll for ~200 union employees, ensuring correct wage rates, shift premiums, overtime, vacation, and statutory holiday pay
  • Apply collective agreements — administer deductions for union dues, benefits, and pensions; update wage tables when new agreements are ratified
  • Maintain master data — onboard new hires, track job classifications, cost-codes, ROEs, terminations, and lay-offs
  • Prepare union remittances & CRA filings; submit WSIB, EHT, and other provincial reports on deadline
  • Own payroll-to-GL reconciliation; partner with Accounting to balance labour cost reports and job-cost allocations
  • Serve as first-line support for payroll inquiries from employees, site supervisors, HR, and union reps
  • Lead or assist system transition once the payroll platform is selected—data migration, parallel runs, and SOP documentation
  • Support audits (internal, external, and union) by producing required registers, summaries, and backup
What You'll Bring
  • 3+ years running union payroll in construction, heavy civil, or industrial settings
  • Solid understanding of Ontario ESA, CRA source deductions, WSIB rules, and multi-trade collective agreements
  • Experience with mid-to-enterprise payroll/ERP systems (e.g., Jonas, CMiC, JD Edwards, Ceridian, ADP) and advanced Excel skills
  • Proven ability to manage high-volume payroll (150+ employees) with accuracy and efficiency under tight weekly deadlines
  • Strong communication skills to explain payroll matters to field staff, accountants, and leadership
  • Asset: PCP or CPM designation through the National Payroll Institute
Why Join
  • Opportunity to help shape payroll operations for a growing construction business
  • Be a key contributor in the upcoming payroll system implementation
  • Competitive salary, full benefits, and room for growth into Payroll Lead or HRIS roles as the team expands
