- Process weekly payroll for ~200 union employees, ensuring correct wage rates, shift premiums, overtime, vacation, and statutory holiday pay
- Apply collective agreements — administer deductions for union dues, benefits, and pensions; update wage tables when new agreements are ratified
- Maintain master data — onboard new hires, track job classifications, cost-codes, ROEs, terminations, and lay-offs
- Prepare union remittances & CRA filings; submit WSIB, EHT, and other provincial reports on deadline
- Own payroll-to-GL reconciliation; partner with Accounting to balance labour cost reports and job-cost allocations
- Serve as first-line support for payroll inquiries from employees, site supervisors, HR, and union reps
- Lead or assist system transition once the payroll platform is selected—data migration, parallel runs, and SOP documentation
- Support audits (internal, external, and union) by producing required registers, summaries, and backup
- 3+ years running union payroll in construction, heavy civil, or industrial settings
- Solid understanding of Ontario ESA, CRA source deductions, WSIB rules, and multi-trade collective agreements
- Experience with mid-to-enterprise payroll/ERP systems (e.g., Jonas, CMiC, JD Edwards, Ceridian, ADP) and advanced Excel skills
- Proven ability to manage high-volume payroll (150+ employees) with accuracy and efficiency under tight weekly deadlines
- Strong communication skills to explain payroll matters to field staff, accountants, and leadership
- Asset: PCP or CPM designation through the National Payroll Institute
