We are looking for a full-time Assistant Controller to work out of our head office in Oakville. This role reports directly to the Director of Finance and offers a competitive salary, plus full benefits.

ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Assistant Controller will play a critical role in supporting the Director of Finance by overseeing the company's accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. This is a hands-on role requiring a proactive, detail-oriented leader with deep knowledge of Canadian accounting standards, construction industry practices, and a focus on continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations
Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements ensuring compliance with ASPE.
Manage full-cycle accounting including journal entries, ledger maintenance, and account reconciliations.
Oversee month-end and year-end processes, including consolidation and variance analysis.
Prepare financial reporting packages for internal and external stakeholders.
Supervise AP and AR functions and collaborate with HR on payroll accuracy.
Internal Controls & Compliance
Develop and maintain internal controls and accounting policies.
Coordinate internal and external audit activities.
Ensure compliance with all tax regulations (HST, payroll taxes, WSIB, etc.).
Process Improvement & Systems
Analyze and improve accounting processes leveraging ERP and accounting software (e.g., Acumatica, Procore).
Help refine SOPs and reporting tools.
Support system upgrades, automation, and implementation of new accounting standards.
Business Support & Analysis
Collaborate with Project Accountants for financial analysis and reporting.
Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning.
Team Leadership & Development
Mentor and guide accounting team members.
Ensure departmental goals are met through delegation and accountability.
ABOUT YOU:
You are perfect for this role because you have:
- CPA designation (or are pursuing one).
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with 2+ years in a leadership role (ideally in construction or a related industry).
- Solid knowledge of ASPE, tax compliance, and construction accounting practices.
- Proficiency in ERP systems such as Acumatica or Procore and advanced Excel skills.
- A proven track record of leading audits and improving processes.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
