We have an opportunity for a Ship Planner within our Deltaport Ship Planning Department. This is a unionized position represented by ILWU Local 502.
Duties
Reporting to the Manager, Terminal Planning, you will perform day-to-day vessel planning activities with the goal of maximizing the overall production of container vessel operations.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Creating a comprehensive vessel plan by:
o Setting up pre-operational planning in the Terminal Operating System (NAVIS XPS and N4).
o Vessel stowing by moving containers in the system from the yard to the ship.
o Establishing effective work programs to follow best practices and meet operational requirements.
Supporting the live vessel operation by:
o Communicating clearly and concisely with the Vessel Superintendent and external stakeholders.
o Delivering vessel plans in a timely manner.
o Making adjustments as needed while working in the live operation.
o Adhering to established planning and safety standards.
Improving production by reviewing the yard plan with the respective departments, Yard Planning and Customer Service
Carrying out comprehensive handovers;
Completing post operation reporting, and
Liaising with Steamship lines, Port captain, Chief Officer and all other external customers as well as maintaining strong inter-departmental communication.

Qualifications
You bring the following knowledge and experience:
- High school graduation is required and a diploma in Logistics, Transportation or Shipping is preferred.
- Two (2) years of relevant and related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to follow established procedures with attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated superior analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Demonstrated organizational skills including the ability to multi-task, prioritize and work under pressure in order to meet tight deadlines.
- Demonstrated sound verbal communication skills including telephone call-handling skills and the ability to respond to difficult or demanding situations with tact and diplomacy.
- Demonstrated courteous, professional manner in dealing with internal and external contacts and customers, including positive interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to keyboard at an intermediate level.
- Ability to work effectively with software applications required to support operations activities, including the MS Office suite of applications.
- Knowledge of rail and marine terminal / operations environment an asset.
In addition, you must be able to work assigned shifts and days of the week required to support a 24/7 operation. Overtime may be required. Also, a valid Transportation Security Clearance (“TSC”) is required for this role.
