Reporting to the Manager, Technical Services, the Technical Analyst - Underwriter will play a critical role in supporting Account Executives by delivering detailed analysis, strategic reporting, and thoughtful recommendations that help clients make informed decisions about their benefit plans.
This is a rare opportunity for an experienced Group Benefits Underwriter or Technical Consultant to transition to the advisory side, where your technical skills, insight, and voice will directly contribute to client success.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Analyze and negotiate group insurance renewals, reviewing insurer assumptions, and recommending alternate strategies to benefit clients.
- Lead the marketing process, including the preparation of specifications, coordinating insurer responses, and conducting comparative analysis of quotes.
- Review and validate refund accounting statements and ASO financial reconciliations for accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare detailed client-ready reports for renewals, marketing, and financial reconciliations, including clear commentary and recommendations.
- Calculate 9-month renewal projections for budgeting purposes and respond to other client-specific experience review requests.
- Provide pricing models for planning design changes and support Account Executives in illustrating the financial impact of various scenarios.
- Identify risks or improvement areas in plan design based on client goals and claims experience.
- Stay current on industry trends and build positive relationships with insurance carriers and other partners.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 5 years of experience in group benefits, preferably as a Group Benefits Underwriter at a major insurer or in a technical analyst role with a brokerage or consulting firm.
- Post-secondary education in business, actuarial science, mathematics, or a related field. A university or college degree is required.
- Industry designations such as CEBS, GBA, or working toward completion are considered an asset.
- Strong working knowledge of group benefits products, funding models (ASO, insured, refund accounting), and renewal/pricing methodologies.
- Experience with public sector or unionized group benefits is an asset.

- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills – able to summarize technical concepts in client-friendly language.

- Proactive and solutions-oriented, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small, team-based environment.
