Good Shepherd Centres' Barton-Tiffany Emergency Shelter provides temporary accommodation to individuals and 2-person households who face exceptional barriers to accessing traditional shelter programs. This housing-focused emergency shelter program offers private, self-contained units for residents (and their pets) on a site owned by the City of Hamilton.

How You Will Make an Impact
Reporting to the Director, this is a pivotal leadership role where you'll guide a dedicated, multi-disciplinary team committed to creating a hospitable, safe, welcoming environment for residents while developing plans that will assist them in optimizing their quality of life and achieving housing stability in the community.
This role is about more than just operations-you'll mentor frontline staff, ensure the smooth execution of daily programming, and bring a steady, empathetic presence to a team that's making a real difference. Ideal candidates will have at least three years of experience working with people impacted by homelessness, poverty, mental health issues and/or substance use. Experience in a residential setting is an asset.
In this role you will:
- Provide direct client service to program participants.
- Provide a work ethic in leadership and role modelling of behaviours that demonstrates the Mission, Vision and Values of Good Shepherd Centres - Temporary Barton Tiffany Shelter.
- Assist the program manager with onboarding, orientation and training of new co-workers.
- Provide ongoing mentorship and coordination to team members to support consistency and quality in all service provision.
- Provide insight and input, as required, to the performance evaluation process.
- Support the Director and Program Managers in staff recruitment activities as required.
- In conjunction with the Program Managers, provide leadership and facilitation for shift change and case conferencing.
- Facilitate comprehensive shift changes and ensure appropriate delegation and distribution of shift responsibilities.
- Be conversant and engaged with all resident care plans including capacity and support needs.
- Provide leadership and support to staff teams with conflict resolution and crisis intervention.
- In consultation with the Director and program managers, provide guidance and feedback to staff to support the provision of quality service within the standards of practice as informed by Good Shepherd and Barton Tiffany policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with co-workers and allied health and human services professionals to assist residents in achieving housing goals, enhancing their engagement in community, and in optimizing their mental and physical health.
- Provide service in a dignified, culturally safe and respectful manner that reflects the charism of Good Shepherd and anti-racist/anti-oppressive, trauma-informed and harm reduction principles.
- Participate in team meetings and team decision making.
- Maintain records of service statistics, client records and program records as directed.
- Identify trends, gaps and emerging issues relevant to the experiences of program participants and communicate these with all team members, program manager and director.
- Always Maintain the confidentiality policy of Good Shepherd Centres.
- Observe all health and safety rules and work in compliance with the provisions of the occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations
- Any other job-related tasks as required by the Program Manager or Director.
What You'll Bring to Our Team
- A minimum of three years of experience in the housing and homelessness sector
- A compassionate leader with at least three years of experience working with individuals impacted by homelessness, poverty, mental health challenges, and/or substance use.
- Experience in a residential or shelter setting is a strong asset.
- A diploma or degree in a social service-related field.
- Crisis intervention skills and experience, along with a foundational understanding of mental health and addiction support.
- Ability to work in a lower - barrier, housing-focused shelter environment with women, men transgender and non-binary adults - both singles and couples.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors and in an environment that accommodates pets/animals
- A valid driver's license is an asset for this position.
- Fluency in a language in addition to English is an asset
