Purpose
The Supervisor of Transportation Operations plays a key role in managing the daily operations of the transportation department, ensuring efficient and cost-effective delivery of goods. This individual is a resource and the ‘go to' person for the carriers and logistics personnel, coordinating with internal departments, maintaining compliance with transportation regulations, and optimizing logistical processes. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a deep understanding of transportation logistics and best practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team Supervision:
- Supervise, train, and mentor Logistics Coordinators.
- Ensure team adherence to company policies and procedures.
- Operational Oversight:
- Coordinate and monitor daily transportation operations to ensure timely and accurate delivery of goods.
- Develop and implement efficient routing and scheduling plans to maximize productivity and minimize costs.
- Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of shipment documentation, including bills of lading, delivery receipts, and freight invoices.
- Cost Management:
- Prepare and analyze transportation reports to track performance metrics, identify trends, and implement improvements.
- Assist in the development and management of the transportation budget, ensuring alignment with company financial goals.
- Coordination and Communication:
- Collaborate with other departments, such as warehouse, sales, and customer service, to ensure seamless and integrated operations.
- Communicate effectively with team members, management, and external partners to coordinate transportation activities and resolve issues.
- Develop and implement communication protocols to keep all stakeholders informed of transportation status, changes, and developments.
- Participate in cross-functional meetings to align transportation strategies with overall company objectives.
- Technology and Innovation:
- Utilize transportation management software (TMS) to optimize routing, scheduling, and load planning.
- Recommend innovative solutions to improve transportation efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance service quality.
- Conduct periodic reviews of transportation processes and recommend improvements to enhance operational effectiveness based on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in transportation logistics.
- Additional Responsibilities:
- Assist in managing cross-dock operations, ensuring efficient planning and execution of inbound inventory consolidation and product distribution.
- Support the planning and execution of LTL and route consolidation loads across Canada.
- Utilize data analysis and forecasting to understand customer volumes and peaks, facilitating efficient resource allocation and planning.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of High School Diploma, College preferred
- 3-5 years of experience in a 3rd party logistics environment
- Experience in a supervisory role will be considered an asset
- Proficient in transportation management software (TMS) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong understanding of supply chain management principles, including transportation logistics, inventory management, and distribution
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and customers
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
- Exceptional organizational and multitasking skills
