This is afull-time, fixed-term position covering a maternity leave, ideal for a youth-focused professional excited to deliver creative programming and build meaningful connections with young people.

About the Role

Reporting to the Youth Centres Coordinator, the Youth Counsellor leads programming at a primary centre site while supporting activities and events across the municipality. You will plan and implement social, recreational, and life skills-based programming aligned with CYCs core pillars. The position requires regular after-school and weekend hours, with flexibility for events and outreach beyond standard hours.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement engaging programming that reflects youth interests and CYC pillars.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful space for youth participation.
  • Build strong, supportive relationships with youth, acting as a role model and mentor.
  • Utilize de-escalation and brief counselling strategies as needed.
  • Promote programs through social media, local outreach, and community events.
  • Connect youth to relevant community services and make referrals as appropriate.
  • Track attendance, maintain accurate records, and follow safety and reporting protocols.
  • Collaborate with team members and contribute to program-wide consistency and improvement.
  • Maintain a clean and organized centre environment.
  • Assist with fundraising efforts and promotional initiatives.
  • Manage petty cash and ensure proper activity permits are obtained.
  • Represent the centre at internal and community-based meetings.

What Were Looking For

Education & Certifications:

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Social Services, Child and Youth Work, or a related field.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification required.
  • Crisis Intervention, ASIST, Safe Food Handling (assets).
  • G-class drivers license and liability insurance (asset).

Experience & Skills:

  • Experience working with youth aged 1218 in group programming settings.
  • Strong ability to lead fun, youth-centered activities and build rapport quickly.
  • Proficient in de-escalation, brief counselling, and conflict resolution techniques.
  • Understanding of youth development and related challenges.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently, maintain professional boundaries, and uphold confidentiality.
  • Competence with Microsoft Office and virtual engagement tools.
  • Knowledge of youth programming trends and use of social media for youth engagement.

Working Conditions
