This is afull-time, fixed-term position covering a maternity leave, ideal for a youth-focused professional excited to deliver creative programming and build meaningful connections with young people.
About the Role
Reporting to the Youth Centres Coordinator, the Youth Counsellor leads programming at a primary centre site while supporting activities and events across the municipality. You will plan and implement social, recreational, and life skills-based programming aligned with CYCs core pillars. The position requires regular after-school and weekend hours, with flexibility for events and outreach beyond standard hours.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and implement engaging programming that reflects youth interests and CYC pillars.
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful space for youth participation.
- Build strong, supportive relationships with youth, acting as a role model and mentor.
- Utilize de-escalation and brief counselling strategies as needed.
- Promote programs through social media, local outreach, and community events.
- Connect youth to relevant community services and make referrals as appropriate.
- Track attendance, maintain accurate records, and follow safety and reporting protocols.
- Collaborate with team members and contribute to program-wide consistency and improvement.
- Maintain a clean and organized centre environment.
- Assist with fundraising efforts and promotional initiatives.
- Manage petty cash and ensure proper activity permits are obtained.
- Represent the centre at internal and community-based meetings.
What Were Looking For
Education & Certifications:
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in Social Services, Child and Youth Work, or a related field.
- Valid First Aid/CPR certification required.
- Crisis Intervention, ASIST, Safe Food Handling (assets).
- G-class drivers license and liability insurance (asset).
Experience & Skills:
- Experience working with youth aged 1218 in group programming settings.
- Strong ability to lead fun, youth-centered activities and build rapport quickly.
- Proficient in de-escalation, brief counselling, and conflict resolution techniques.
- Understanding of youth development and related challenges.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently, maintain professional boundaries, and uphold confidentiality.
- Competence with Microsoft Office and virtual engagement tools.
- Knowledge of youth programming trends and use of social media for youth engagement.
