Job Title: Environmental ManagerReporting directly to the VP of Environment & Regulatory Affairs, the Environment Manager supports the implementation of sustainability requirements at the Eskay Mine site. This site-based role will work across operational departments and is responsible for proactively supporting site activities in alignment with legislative requirements, permits, and other commitments made by the Company.
The Environment Manager will enable site operations to achieve and maintain compliance with federal, provincial (BC), and Tahltan regulatory requirements. The role also includes implementing the site Environmental Management System (EMS) and driving site environmental initiatives. In addition, the Environment Manager will work closely with the Skeena Sustainability team to support the development of the Revitalization Project, including the implementation of various agreements and strengthening the relationship with the Tahltan Central Government.
Responsibilities (including but not limited to):Leadership and Team Development
- Lead and manage the site Environmental team.
- Provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentorship to site teams and operations.
- Support the development of the Environmental team, including budget oversight, activity scheduling, and resource planning to meet operational needs.
- Maintain accountability with internal and external stakeholders on key deliverables to foster a performance-driven culture.
Communication
- Provide ongoing operational environmental support through proactive collaboration.
- Work closely with the Operations team to ensure site activities align with legislative requirements, permits, and commitments, while staying on schedule and within budget.
- Participate in the environmental aspects of site emergency preparedness and response planning.
Training and Awareness
- Develop and deliver environmental training programs for employees at all levels.
- Oversee the creation of educational materials, including handouts, presentations, and digital content.
- Conduct workshops, seminars, and field activities to enhance environmental awareness.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and implement improvements as needed.
- Collaborate with other departments to integrate environmental best practices into daily operations.
- Stay current on environmental laws, regulations, and industry best practices.
- Promote a culture of environmental stewardship and sustainability across the organization.
- Prepare reports on training initiatives and environmental performance metrics.
Environmental Management System (EMS)
- Coordinate the implementation and ongoing maintenance of the site EMS to proactively manage compliance, risk, and performance.
- Oversee consultants and coordinate Qualified Professionals (QPs) to complete EMS-related activities.
- Conduct environmental audits and assessments as required.
- Manage site environmental data and records in accordance with regulatory and company standards.
- Implement and manage Isometrix PMIS and EQWIN/EQUIS software systems.
Compliance and Reporting
- Coordinate the completion of environmental compliance reporting, including the analysis and interpretation of data to support informed site-level decision-making.
- Support the implementation and tracking of sustainability initiatives, including the reporting of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) metrics.
Indigenous Engagement and Governance
- Develop and maintain internal and external relationships necessary to support site sustainability commitments, with a focus on Tahltan management and governance of environmental matters.
Other
- Perform other duties as reasonably assigned.
- A minimum of a bachelor's degree or diploma in a field related to regulatory approvals and/or directly relevant environmental discipline.
- Registered as a Qualified Professional, or eligible for, preferred g., EP, P.Ag
- A minimum of 10 + years' experience in site/operational environmental management, preferably in the mining sector, on comparable projects.
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing multi-disciplinary teams, including in environmental leadership roles as a project owner/operator.
- Broad-based experience with environmental aspects related to the mining industry, including but not limited to water quality, ML/ARD, construction environmental management, and contractor
management. - Demonstrated success implementing Environmental Management Systems, and compliance requirements across multi-discipline teams.
- Experience in an environmental leadership role as a project owner/operator
- Solid understanding of the BC and federal regulatory processes, and technical environmental studies as relevant to mining project development.
- Demonstrated capability and experience working with Indigenous governments/communities including history, protocols, values, and governance and implementing those values.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to support communication of permitting requirements across the organization.
- Expertise with a variety of computer programs (e.g., MS Office, Databases, Aconex).
- Motivated and willing to take ownership of tasks.
- Strong organization skills, managing, tracking, and recording multiple tasks and a heavy workload.
