About this Role
The Civil Project Manager oversees all aspects of assigned projects from planning through completion. This includes reviewing estimates and contracts, preparing and managing budgets, coordinating with internal teams and external stakeholders, and ensuring timely, cost-effective delivery. The role also involves managing project documentation and financial performance, and keeping management informed of any factors that may impact outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Review project estimates, contracts, and specifications and work closely with the Estimating team on bid submissions.
- Prepare and manage detailed project budgets, communicate any revisions as needed, and conduct monthly financial reviews to track costs against projections.
- Lead and participate in pre-construction meetings to review specifications, define roles and responsibilities, coordinate subcontractor and supplier involvement, and establish scheduling and payment timelines.
- Coordinate and obtain all required permits and utility locates, and ensure all necessary documentation is kept up to date and maintained on site. This includes items such as permits, drawings, and emergency response plans.
- Supervise and mentor Project Coordinators, support their training and development, and provide day-to-day guidance as needed.
- Work with the Superintendent to schedule labour and equipment, and regularly visit the job site to monitor progress, production, and compliance with the project scope and budget.
- Promote and uphold company health and safety standards and legislative requirements and collaborate with the Health and Safety team when necessary.
- Oversee procurement by preparing purchase orders for subcontractors and suppliers, review shop drawings, and coordinate the start of material fabrication.
- Identify and communicate any project issues or risks to the Director on an ongoing basis.
- Manage change orders by gathering cost information, submitting timely notifications for extra work, and maintaining clear communication with clients.
- Ensure all work is completed to meet contract specifications and approved changes. Oversee site cleanup and address any deficiencies at project close-out.
- Approve all job-related costs and ensure they are properly coded and aligned with the project budget and purchase orders.
- Submit progress payment certificates along with subcontractor invoices to Accounting and ensure timely processing and payment.
- Conduct inspections and prepare required reports throughout the project.
- At project close, analyze overall financial performance and share lessons learned with the team to support ongoing improvement.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Education and Experience Requirements
- A degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field is required.
- A minimum of 35 years of experience as a Project Manager in the heavy civil construction sector is preferred.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to lead, motivate, and resolve conflicts effectively.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Project) with working knowledge of AutoCAD. Experience with HCSS and eCMS project software is highly desirable.
- Solid problem-solving and mathematical reasoning abilities, with the capability to interpret and analyze construction drawings and blueprints.
- A strong commitment to health and safety, with knowledge of related policies and legislation.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is considered an asset.

- Construction environment can be difficult conditions, this role will require working outdoors and indoors.
- Manual dexterity required.
- Overtime as required.
- Providing service to several people or departments, working under many simultaneous deadlines.
