The Food Services Manager (FSM)/Environmental Service Manager (ESM) reports to the Executive Director and provides leadership in all aspects of the dietary operation within established legislative and professional standards, manages human, material, and fiscal resources, and monitors the quality of care and services delivered to clients through effective quality improvement activities. In addition, performs general, routine maintenance and servicing operations throughout the home, in accordance with applicable codes and regulations and as directed by the Executive Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Chairs the Resident Food Committee meetings
  • Liaise with Registered Dietitian to provide resident nutrition care Complete required documentation and communication on any resident care, food production changes and other observations
  • Ongoing delivery of customer service with team members, residents, families, and the general public
  • Ensures meal times are a social occasion and these must involve all team members
  • Ensuring optimal quality of life for each resident by providing well balanced meals
  • Report faulty equipment and ensure lock/tag out is practiced.
  • Understands homes Quality Improvement Program and participates in departmental auditing.
  • Responsible for tracking inventory of food/drinks as well as ordering food twice per week and then ensuring that items arrived from food order are in good condition.
  • Ensures compliance with Public Health and Ministry of Health and Long Term Care standards and regulations
  • Utilizes equipment and supplies within budgetary constraints
  • Participates in budgeting process in collaboration with Executive Director
  • Participates in Joint Food Service Managers Meetings
  • As directed and in accordance with applicable codes and regulations, performs a variety of routine maintenance, servicing and repair operations to maintain home, equipment, furnishings, fixtures, and grounds in proper condition. Responsible for effectively scheduling & supervising maintenance and repair work.
  • Assigns maintenance crew to specific tasks, supervises to ensure standards and safety rules are observed and maintained.
  • Observes and monitors all areas of the home for ongoing maintenance requirements and carries out preventative maintenance programs as directed.
  • Supervises the Handy Person and Painters, prepares time and work schedules, staff training and performance appraisals.
  • Performs typical work such as replacing fuses and light bulbs, repairing call bells, clearing drains, repairing beds, chairs, tables, etc., painting and redecorating tasks, replacing tiles, and removing garbage.
  • Following approval, refers problems requiring specialized work such as electrical or plumbing, to outside contractors and monitors work performed.
  • Provides general assistance to skilled trade persons such as mechanics, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, painters, etc., as required.
  • Conducts regular maintenance rounds to ensure all life safety and building and support systems are functioning properly.
  • Adheres to established policies and procedures regarding quality assurance, safety, environment and infection control
  • Participates in fire prevention and fire drill procedures, including staff training (if certified),
    in proper procedures and use of firefighting equipment. Liaises with local municipal Fire
    Departments.
  • Liaises with outside service contractors and inspectors to assure equipment and environment conform to applicable codes and regulations
  • Participates in budget preparation and control. Orders and/or purchases supplies/equipment in accordance with established purchasing policies and budgetary constraints.
  • Participates in Committee Meetings such as infection control, quality assurance and safety, as required. Establishes and maintains communications with other departments and works
    cooperatively in carrying out duties to assure the needs of residents are being met.
  • Maintains required records, reports, statistics, etc., in accordance with policies, procedures and legislative requirements
  • Ensures the privacy of residents during performance of duties.
  • Maintains work area in a clean, orderly and safe manner and assures proper care in use of tools, equipment and supplies.
  • Notifies the Administrator/Executive Director of significant building/equipment malfunctions/problems
  • Plans, organizes, directs and supervises the activities of the housekeeping and laundry departments to ensure high standards of cleanliness and sanitation and to provide quality linen and personal laundry service in compliance with legislative requirements. Establishes and monitors workflow, evaluates performance and production and makes changes, as necessary, to improve quality of service. Coordinates activities with those of other departments. Informs administration of activities, needs and problems
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

The qualifications needed to join our family are as follows:

  • Experience in a managerial or supervisory capacity, or in the reasonable opinion of the Home, appropriate skills, knowledge and experience in a health care or relevant setting to perform the duties required of the position.
  • Previous managerial experience in a unionized long-term care concepts and philosophies
  • Active member of Canadian Society of Nutrition & Management (CSNM) or a registered dietitian
  • Comprehensive knowledge of long-term care concepts and philosophies
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Policy and program development
  • Good judgment & decision making, solving problems & effective conflict management
  • Ability to listen and respect others' points of view
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices, and, if there are none, prevailing practices related to housekeeping, laundry and maintenance as applicable.
  • Experience in general maintenance and repairs preferred.
  • Preferred knowledge of commercial cleaning and laundry equipment, chemicals/agents, laundry products and methods/processes. Some previous experience in performing housekeeping and laundry functions. Supervisory skills required to manage staff and resources. Knowledge of safety rules and procedures and legislation pertaining to
    housekeeping and laundry operations.
  • Ability to read, write and understand oral and written instructions.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, plumbing and carpentry; ability to
    read and interpret manuals related to equipment and systems.
  • Ability to evaluate and determine when the services of skilled trade's people are necessary. Skilled in the use of a wide range of tools.
  • Ability to train, direct and supervise others.
  • Knowledge - possibly Journeyman in one (1) on the mechanical /electrical trades.
  • To show evidence of being focused on people's feelings when interacting and knowing how to turn a task into positive social interaction.
  • To undertake and meet all legal requirements within a context of promoting individuals' rights and measuring/reducing elements of risk.
  • Must have a clear vulnerable sector screen, no older than 6 months, TB test results less than 6 months old, must be able to provide three supervisory references.
