About the Role:

The Northern Alberta YMCA is looking for an Aquatics Operations Coordinator to create a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while providing effective supervision and risk management to the overall delivery of all aquatic programs. This role is working on strategies to improve the members' experience, affecting an increase in retention, program quality and overall member satisfaction in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, hire, train, coach, supervise and manage all staff and volunteers within Aquatics.
  • Build a high functioning team. Ensure team members understand expectations, receive regular feedback/appreciation and work together to support each other.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members, program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.
  • Knows and reviews all emergency procedures, pool standards and best practices; responds to situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures; completes related reports or recommendations as required.
  • Ensure Service that Shines and other related aquatics standards are consistently met and respond to service issues with possible solutions in a timely manner.
  • Ongoing evaluation of all Swim Programs, ensuring members can access lessons and children are progressing. A continuous improvement plan is in place to ensure sessional swimming lessons are of the highest quality.
  • Continuous support of the Aquatics Center Manager and with Junior Lifeguard Club, Swim Club and ASP program support. Ensuring a plan is in place at your Centre to support these programs achieve a high-quality standard.
  • Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the Alberta health code including but not limited to water tests, attendance tracking, and staff certifications.
  • Ensuring aquatics facility and programs are safe by conducting audits and evaluations, reviewing checklists and equipment, performing health & safety checks. Daily walk arounds are being completed and action is taken to correct unsafe or high-risk areas.
  • Ongoing evaluation of aquatic supervision and lifeguarding ensuring YMCA scanning, guarding and patrol standards are consistently met and immediately address deficiencies.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years' experience in a leadership capacity in an Aquatics environment
  • University degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Education, or related experience an asset.
  • Certifications: Intermediate First Aid & CPR-C, National Lifeguard (NL) Pool, must hold one of YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI) or Lifesaving Instructor (LSI)
  • Obtain Lifesaving Swim Instructor (LSI) and YMCA Champion - Aquatics within 1 year of hire date.
  • Obtain Oxygen Administration (O2) with 6 months of hire date.
  • Aquatics Emergency Care (AEC) and National Coaching Certification (NCCP) are an asset.
  • Leadership Certification in Aquatic Supervisor Training (AST), National Lifeguard Instructor (NLI) or First Aid Instructor (FAI) is an asset.
  • Able to obtain a Police Information Check with Vulnerable sector check.
  • Must obtain employer specific WHMIS and child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level currency without expiry, as well as physical and mental readiness.
