Role Summary
As a Hoe Pack Operator, you are a key contributor to the backfilling and compaction phases of deep underground water and sewer installations. Your attention to detail and technical operation ensures proper soil stability and long-term trench performance, supporting the success of every water and sewer project.
In this role you will be responsible for the following:
- Compaction & Soil Stabilization Operate an excavator with a Hoe Pack to compact bedding, backfill, and trench materials. Adjust vibration pressure and duration to ensure proper density without damaging pipes.
- Trench Safety & Infrastructure Protection Compact safely around pipes, valves, and CC risers. Keep casings straight and avoid over pressing or displacing buried infrastructure.
- Attachment Setup & Inspection Check hydraulic fittings for cleanliness and proper threading. Grease the compactor regularly and keep breaker pins upright. Never pry concrete or asphalt with attachments.
- Operating Mode & Controls Management Use correct hydraulic mode for compaction. Ensure valve positions are set properly when switching between attachments to avoid equipment damage.
- Support Excavation & Backfill Crews Assist with excavation, grading, and material placement when compactor work is not required. Coordinate with the crew to keep production moving.
- Communication & Coordination Communicate clearly with ground crews and supervisors using hand signals or radios. Stay alert to changes in grade stakes, trench layout, and site plans.
- Site Safety & Compliance Follow Alberta OHS, ground disturbance rules, and GS Construction safety protocols. Report unsafe conditions or equipment issues immediately.
- Equipment Care & Maintenance Perform daily checks on fluids, hoses, and fittings. Grease, refuel, and clean equipment as needed to maintain safe operation.
Qualifications
- 12 years of experience operating an excavator, ideally with a Hoe Pac in a water and sewer environment.
- Strong understanding of compaction techniques, trench safety, and backfilling procedures.
- Ability to read and work from grade stakes and site plans.
- Certifications preferred: CSTS, Ground Disturbance Level II, First Aid/CPR.
- Valid Class 5 drivers license with a clean driving record.
