Who we need
Reporting to the Program Director, we are seeking an experienced and passionate Video Game Audio Instructor to teach an 11-week course on game audio production. You will guide students through the fundamentals of game audio design, including sound design, audio integration, and the use of industry-standard software. You will channel your experience in game audio production and a strong understanding of audio principles in interactive media to help students build the capstone projects that will define their portfolios and their futures.
This is a part-time role teaching 3 hours per week plus marking time over 11 weeks, beginning in July 2025 (exact date to be determined). Classes can be taught remotely or on-site at the Toronto Campus located at 415 Yonge Street.
Who you are
You are a game audio professional with real-world experience and a strong creative portfolio, and you are looking for a way to give back to the next generation of creators. Whether your path has taken you through recognized development companies, independent game builders, or experimental work, you understand how sound shapes immersive game experiences.
What's in it for you
Creative impact. This is not just another freelance gig or side contract. It is a chance to shape how the next generation of designers think about audio in games. You want to be part of a program that values creative excellence and has already produced award-winning talent. You will work with students during a key moment in their education: when they are building capstone games that showcase everything they have learned. Your guidance will teach them how to design sound and influence how they think creatively, work collaboratively, and solve problems.
Flexibility. With just three hours per week of in-class instruction, this part-time role offers the freedom to continue working on your projects or studio commitments. Whether you prefer to teach remotely or can commute to our downtown Toronto campus, we can accommodate your schedule, with class times between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.
Mentorship and meaning. Teaching at Toronto Film School means joining a community of respected creatives and educators. Our students are among the best in the province, as evidenced by their back-to-back wins at Ontario's Level Up Showcase. You will have the opportunity to mentor students who are serious about their craft and motivated to succeed.
Reputation and growth. As a sessional instructor, you will become part of a forward-thinking school that values your industry experience. Many of our instructors return term after term to teach the same course, build strong student relationships, and contribute to the evolution of our curriculum. You will also benefit from exposure to a vast network of alumni, faculty, and industry partners who recognize the calibre of work coming out of TFS.
As our new Video Game Audio Instructor, you will:
- Provide practical instruction. You will guide students through assignments, projects, and exercises that simulate real-world game audio production scenarios, leveraging ProTools for audio creation, editing, and mixing. You will teach students how to use audio within game engines, with an emphasis on Unreal Engine, as well as Unity. You will conduct engaging and interactive lectures, demonstrations, and workshops. You will monitor student progress and guide improvement.
- Maintain an organized and supportive learning environment. You will nurture open communication and encourage on-campus and remote interaction and engagement if necessary. You will offer constructive feedback and support to students, helping them develop industry-relevant audio skills. You will collaborate with program coordinators to ensure course content aligns with industry standards and program objectives.
- Contribute to our growth as an exceptional post-secondary institution. You will promote core values, distinctive capabilities and a positive culture supporting equity, inclusion, learning, and wellness. You will uphold the integrity of academic and university policies and comply with provincial and federal legislation.
You have:
- The passion and drive. You bring an AI-forward mindset and are open to using emerging tools in the classroom to support creative learning. You are adaptable, social, and able to communicate complex ideas. You bring a passion for mentoring students, focusing on helping them complete their capstone projects.
- The expertise. You have a strong portfolio showcasing your experience in game audio production, sound design, audio integration, and music composition. Ideally, you have experience with AAA studios such as Ubisoft, Rockstar Games, Digital Extremes, or Sledgehammer Games, though independent game development backgrounds are also welcomed. Prior teaching or training experience is preferred.
- The technical skills. You are proficient in various audio software, including ProTools, and working with sound libraries. You are familiar with implementing audio in game engines, particularly Unreal Engine and Unity. You can quickly learn and use LMS platforms and educational technologies, such as Brightspace.
- The interpersonal skills. You have exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to respond to the needs of a classroom with diverse backgrounds and learning styles. You prioritize inclusivity and can build trusting and influential relationships and nurture strong networks. You have a proven ability to work collaboratively to achieve common goals. You exercise mature decision-making, smoothly navigate conflict, and offer constructive guidance, feedback, and mentorship.
