The Opportunity:

The Maintenance Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the London Maintenance facility to ensure safe, efficient and productive daily operation. This role will also focus on providing appropriate cost reduction solutions, involved in employee engagement as well as recruitment and retention.

Key Accountabilities:

Leadership & Communication

  • Oversee the daily operations of one of the Challenger maintenance facilities
  • Lead an environment where all team members strive for best-in-class customer service with a solution-driven resolution with internal and external customers
  • Effectively and regularly communicate with all Maintenance employees, drivers and owner operators to build positive relationships and ensure any inquiries are handled promptly and courteously
  • Collaborate with other Maintenance Managers to develop best practice solutions, research to resolve issues, review and update processes on a regular basis
  • Promote and lead a health and safety culture to the maintenance team to ensure all safety policies and procedures are followed
  • Promote and lead a continuous improvement culture with department organization and cleanliness

Coaching & Mentoring

  • Mentor, coach and train Shop Team Leaders and employees with trade and leadership knowledge to develop their skills and competencies to ensure the team follows proper processes and procedures
  • Lead team and individual meetings, promote a training culture through apprentice mentorship, innovative technology and online learning
  • Provide input and be a key player in maintenance and driver retention initiatives

Staffing & Networking

  • Actively involved in HR initiatives, performance reviews, recruiting and retention to ensure the needs of the maintenance department is met
  • Actively involved in local high schools and post-secondary intuitions to promote careers in the transportation industry and build partnerships with educators and students in the trades of Truck and Coach Technician (310T) and Truck Trailer Service Technician (310J)
  • Attend industry meetings and associations, promote Challenger as a premier transportation provider

Quality & Cost Control

  • Complete audits on work orders and repairs to ensure accuracy and quality control; communicate any discrepancies to the appropriate Shop Team Leaders and employees
  • Review invoices periodically for accuracy and prior authorization to ensure customers are billed correctly
  • Maintain vendor relationships with asset purchase, disposal, used equipment sales and lease returns
  • Ability to make critical decisions regarding high cost repairs, equipment lifecycle and warranty exceptions

Analysis & Metrics

  • Utilize existing metrics and establish new metrics and goals for technician productivity to evaluate performance
  • Analyze monthly profit and loss statements, build corrective actions based on results while adhering to budgetary constraints
  • Assist with annual forecasting for the maintenance department, and other projects as assigned from time to time by the Director of Maintenance

What You Need To Be Successful In This Role:

  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience as a Facility/Maintenance Manager in the transportation industry is required
  • Licensed Mechanic with 310T or 310J Red Seal Certification an asset, but not required
  • Member of the Ontario College of Trades (OCOT) is preferred
  • AZ license and heavy equipment operator is an asset
  • Training and certifications in Clean Air, Six Sigma and Lean Management is preferred
  • Business knowledge of North American transportation and fleet maintenance
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, relationship building and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff
  • Ability to lead and coach employees to utilize their strengths and further develop themselves personally and professionally
  • Strong attention to detail with a mechanical aptitude
  • Microsoft Office, computer and telephone skills
  • Creative and effective problem solving ability
  • Strong financial and business acumen
  • Ability to work independently and also in a team environment
  • Strong customer focus
  • Detail oriented with the ability to effectively prioritize and multi-task in a busy environment
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills
