About Smithers Community Services Association:
Founded in 1973, Smithers Community Services Association is dedicated to provision of services which enhance the quality of life and promote equal opportunity for all people within our communities. Working in partnership with our staff, volunteers and clients, we strive for excellence in advocacy, service development and program delivery. We currently have a staff of about 70 people.

Over the last 50 years, SCSA has offered numerous services to the community that changed as the needs of Smithers and area change. Todays SCSA operates numerous programs in the community. We provide services for people with developmental disabilities, parenting programs, youth programs, public transit systems, and family housing sponsored by BC Housing.

PROGRAM SUMMARY:

Goodacre Place Supportive Housing is a 22 unit supported housing project offering long-term tenancies, and 6 short-term emergency stays for people who are experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of becoming homeless.

Goodacre Place Supportive Housing is developed in partnership with BC Housing, the Town of Smithers and Smithers Community Services Association. Together we provide program participants with affordable housing, meals, case planning, social and recreation activities, and other training and workshops. The units are bachelor style and designed for single occupancy, two are wheelchair accessible.To be considered eligible for supportive housing an individual must be experiencing homelessness or be at risk of becoming homeless.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provide basic needs and supports to Smithers homeless, homelessness at risk, and street entrenched population in a housing and shelter environment.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports To: Site Manager, Goodacre Place
  • Direct Reports:None

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides a variety of harm reduction-based supports to individuals living in supportive housing and shelter settings, including distribution and recovery of harm reduction supplies.
  • Set-up of the shelter room and clean-up.
  • Directly assist with decluttering and cleaning clients rooms in supportive housing, including laundry.
  • Facilitates access to local services related to substance use, housing, employment, income assistance, and health/wellness.
  • Uses brief assessment, active listening, and a non-violent approach to respond to and de-escalate crisis.
  • Maintains both paper and electronic client files and logs. Fills out critical incident report forms as needed.
  • Collaborates with the team to develop shared safety and care plans. Communicates resident concerns to the operator, and operator expectations to the residents.
  • Maintain safety of all program spaces by following protocols related to violence prevention and critical incidents.
  • Front desk security services and measures including wellness checks.
  • Assistance with meal service (cold breakfast, hot dinner).
  • Housekeeping (laundry, floors, garbage's, washrooms, etc.)
  • Adheres to all Health/Safety and Emergency procedures including universal precautions.
  • Attends bi-weekly staff meetings.
  • Receive feedback on work performance and be open to learning and change.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Some training and experience in a similar position or a combination of relevant training and experience an asset.
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
  • Food Safe Level 1
  • Naloxone Training

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Shift work that involves days, evenings/overnight, and weekend shifts.
  • 12-hour shifts (8am-8pm; 8pm-8am)
  • This a casual on call position.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada, due to the nature of this work student visa will not be eligible.
  • Work requires moderate level of physical effort and/or dexterity, e.g. using or moving medium weight (5 10 kg.) equipment or materials, reaching overhead, bending/stooping, lifting, working from ladders etc.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be familiar with and adhere to the philosophy, policies and procedures of the Association.
  • Represent the Association positively and professionally at all times.
  • Understand and be committed to terms of confidentiality and sign a pledge of confidentiality.
  • Undergo a Criminal Record Search as and when required by the Association.
  • Actively participate in regular performance evaluations.
