Your key responsibilities

  • Supervise, coach, and support the accounting team in the delivery of timely, accurate reporting and analysis.
  • Coordinate and assist in the preparation of monthly, interim, and annual financial statements and statutory reports.
  • Liaise with external auditors throughout the year and during year-end reviews.
  • Ensure financial reporting complies with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
  • Maintain and monitor internal controls to ensure financial accuracy and integrity.
  • Conduct and support financial forecasting and business unit financial analysis.
  • Provide financial benchmark analysis and interpret accounting data for management decision-making.
  • Lead or support corporate initiatives related to changes in accounting policies and reporting standards.
  • Support corporate budgeting processes including business planning, cost allocation, and financial reporting.
  • Coordinate and assist with the City's grant life-cycle process, including planning and financial submissions.
  • Support the development and enhancement of enterprise systems, including Unit4 modules such as General Ledger, Planner, and Project Cost Billing.
  • Ensure financial system integrity and manage upgrades or enhancements as needed.
  • Collaborate with departments across the City to provide financial support, reporting, and advice.
  • Lead and contribute to corporate projects that impact accounting, budgeting, and financial systems.
  • Provide ongoing performance management, mentorship, and leadership to team members.
  • Promote a collaborative, customer-focused environment that encourages innovation and results.
  • Ensure accounting staff are equipped with the tools, training, and support to succeed in their roles.

What you bring

  • Thorough understanding of accounting principles, PSAS, and IFRS.
  • Proven ability to supervise, mentor, and develop a high-performing team.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and relationship-building skills with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience implementing or optimizing ERP systems (Unit4 preferred).
  • Organizational awareness with the ability to balance strategic thinking and day-to-day operational leadership.
  • Confidence in presenting complex financial information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of progressive experience in an accounting environment.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience in a public sector or municipal environment considered an asset.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
