About the Role
WATT is seeking a highly motivated and adaptable Geomatics & Civil Engineering Technologist to join our team in our newly established & expanding Edmonton office. This role offers significant growth potential by having the opportunity to work across all services offered by WATT while being a key part of establishing and growing the Edmonton office. We are looking for dynamic individuals that are committed to high-quality professional work, meeting the needs of our clients, and working with our multi-disciplinary team to create vibrant and livable communities.
This role will be multi-faceted in the delivery of multiple services including survey & geomatics, civil construction management, civil engineering design & geotechnical testing. The ideal candidate will receive training in all areas of Land Development to deliver services such as:
Topographic and Construction Layout Surveys
Construction Management & Inspection
Civil Design & Drafting
Project Coordination
Regulatory & Client Coordination
What you will bring to WATT:
Degree or Diploma in the field of Civil Engineering, Geomatics or Geotechnical Engineering.
Registered or eligible for registration with ASET or APEGA.
3+ years' experience in the areas of civil engineering or geomatics with focus on land development, subdivisions, and private site work.
Knowledge and/or proficiency of survey equipment and procedures.
Knowledge and/or proficiency of civil design software (Civil 3D).
Comprehensive understanding of civil works with a focus on land development.
Strong presentation, verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to engage with all levels in an organization.
Entrepreneurial mindset with willingness to take ownership, create unique solutions, and drive momentum.
Excellent technical skills and attention to detail.
What you will do at WATT:
This role will have a varying mix of field and office work as required, with options for hybrid work when working on office assignments. As the office grows, this role will be given the opportunity to further define the position with the potential of becoming a division lead. This position will be supported by team members in both the Calgary and Edmonton offices and will serve clients in the Edmonton area as well as in other parts of Central Alberta.
Field Work
Survey & Geomatics:
Act as Party Chief overseeing all aspects of surveying services using UAVs, scanners, GPS, and total stations; plan and execute accurate surveys in various site and weather conditions, including on-call availability.
Offer timely technical advice on survey evidence interpretation, ensure compliance with the Land Titles Act, Surveys Act, and ALS Manual of Standard Practice, and maintain technical competence with field equipment and processes.
Collaborate with field and office teams, interpret technical and legal drawings, identify and resolve discrepancies, and communicate project details and status with key personnel.
Civil Construction Management:
Conduct on-site inspections to ensure construction activities comply with approved plans, specifications, and safety standards.
Review and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and contract documents to guide construction practices and resolve discrepancies.
Coordinate with contractors, consultants, and municipal authorities to monitor project progress, address issues, and ensure quality control.
Prepare detailed field reports, maintain construction records, and support project documentation for compliance and close-out procedures.
Geotechnical:
Perform on-site materials testing including compaction, asphalt, concrete sampling, and pile monitoring, using equipment such as nuclear densometers in accordance with safety protocols.
Prepare daily field reports including compaction and safety documentation, and maintain, calibrate, and operate testing equipment.
Communicate effectively with the engineering team regarding field observations and ensure compliance with CCIL, ASTM, and CSA testing standards.
Office Work:
Produce detailed design work and plans using Civil 3D, including subdivision, condominium, and infrastructure plans, ensuring compliance with municipal and regulatory standards.
Complete & coordinate office-based surveying tasks such as field data processing, computations, drafting, and quality control, while maintaining technical competence in relevant software platforms.
Serve as a key liaison with clients throughout the project lifecycle, including initial engagement, active project phases, and post-project follow-up.
Support field crews with technical resources and guidance, acting as a senior consultant to project managers on complex survey and design matters.
Contribute to continuous improvement by reviewing technical processes, and helping meet project deadlines and approval milestones.
