Job Description

The Director, Security Operations, will be responsible for managing and overseeing all MLSE event operations at over 400 events a year. The Director, Security Operations, will effectively manage the delivery of security operations in a 24/7 dynamic, high-paced environment with our employees, unions, law enforcement, and third-party service suppliers, while delivering outstanding customer service. Responsible for the Integrated Operations Centre, the Director will oversee the use of systems by the security and dispatch teams, as well as parking and ground transportation.

In addition to overseeing day-to-day operations, this role will constantly seek business improvements and craft new methods of service delivery by challenging the status quo. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of driving continuous improvement in a security delivery environment.

Schedule flexibility is a benefit of this position, but this is a highly operational role that requires the Director to be on-site supporting their team to excel.

  • Lead and direct a 350+ team of managers, supervisors, guards, and staff to deliver MLSE's security program with a relentless focus on operational excellence, an engaged workforce, and an exceptional fan experience.
  • Oversee and manage third-party contracts and contractors, ensuring high-quality delivery of security services and value to MLSE.
  • Work closely with security programs, the leagues, our teams, law enforcement, event operations, and other operational units to deliver a program that meets security standard objectives and league compliance, while delivering a seamless experience for fans, employees, vendors, and visitors
  • Coach, mentor, and inspire staff.
  • Work with People & Inclusion and Workforce Planning to develop people-first initiatives that support the recruitment, onboarding, training, development, and succession planning of our large in-house guard team.
  • Determine and implement the department's strategic initiatives, goals, and objectives of the team aligned with MLSE's Venue and Operations strategic plan.
  • Ensure work is performed in a manner that ensures the safety of MLSE employees, teams, and fans, and the public.
  • Develop and oversee budgets, including departmental labour spend, third-party supplier costs, and capital expenditures, and effectively handle controllable expenses.
  • Clearly define and contribute to financial and operational results, including establishing financial and operational metrics and key performance indicators.
  • Champion continuous improvement, innovative thinking, and a culture of service excellence.
  • Lead in the industry by developing a network of contacts at local, national, and international venues.
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in experience related to security is required, with 7+ years of experience in a similar senior leadership capacity.
  • 5+ years of leading a multifaceted and high-performing team with a focus on coaching for influence.
  • Venue, facility, or event experience leading large teams delivering security programs, including high-throughput client security screening required.
  • Well-developed risk management, quality assurance, and emergency management skills.
  • Experience in labour relations, vendor contract negotiations, and management, and outstanding customer/guest experience required.
  • Proficient in business operations, budget management, problem-solving, and data analysis.
  • Moderate knowledge of security systems and technology including CCTV, access control, x-rays, metal detectors, and credentialing programs required to lead a team of staff and contractors managing the physical security systems infrastructure.
  • Superior leadership and management skills; able to lead a team and balance multiple competing priorities.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, consistently meeting deadlines with accurate and detailed results.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) for effective interaction with all levels of company management and personnel.
  • High level of integrity and strong sense of personal ownership and accountability.
  • Ability and interest to work mostly evenings, and on weekends and holidays.
  • Results driven, energetic, creative, and hardworking, with a commitment to the highest quality of care and service. Has a reputation as a leader who “gets things done.”
  • Strong communication skills, comfortable collaborating with all levels of management and works well cross-functionally in a team environment.
