We're looking for a Head of Canada Programs, Munich Re Specialty. Could It Be You?

Under the direction of the Head of Canada Programs and within the delegated authority segment, this role is responsible for the underwriting and P&L management of the Managing General Agent (MGA) portfolio business within the territorial jurisdiction covered by Munich Re of Canada/Temple Insurance.

In this position, you'll have responsibility to lead a team consisting of Underwriters, Data Analysts and Actuaries professionals and will be integral to our success as you develop and implement strategies for the MGA business in the Canadian Primary Insurance market. You will work closely with other members of Munich Re's Programs team in North America.

The Canada Programs team is responsible for the managing, marketing, underwriting and development of Property and Casualty insurance business directly with MGAs in the Canadian market.

  • Profitability responsibility for the Munich Re Specialty Canada Programs underwriting portfolio
  • Active engagement with MGAs to identify new program opportunities and onboard new MGAs and programs with strong profitability levels that can grow and develop over time
  • Develop and implement account strategies for the MGA team in Canada.
  • Establishment of business plans and client strategies to maximize profitable divisional growth while maintain strong client relationships
  • Leadership, management and development of the team in Canada, including coaching, training, objective setting and performance management of assigned staff members
  • Ensuring close co-operation and collaboration with other teams in the US and the GSI network in order to bring the Group's product and services to the local Canadian MGA market
  • Responsible for the steering and development of the client portfolio
  • Drive margin optimization and volatility management
  • Ensuring that underwriting and production efforts follow corporate underwriting guidelines and established best practices
  • Promote cross border capabilities
  • Analyze and report on Key Performance Indicators in accordance with the current philosophy and standards of the business as part of our quarterly business review process
  • Prepare and present Quarterly Business Review and other reports to Senior Management
  • Manage and deploy NAT CAT budgets with the best return on capital.

  • First and foremost, you will demonstrate strong leadership and achievement, a strong work ethic, enthusiasm towards change and a drive to make a difference.

In addition, we are looking for the following qualifications:

  • Post secondary education in a technical discipline such as Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Statistics or equivalent.
  • Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) / Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) designation.
  • 10+ years of experience in underwriting with a broad array of experience across casualty, professional and property lines of business
  • Minimum 5+ years underwriting experience with MGA business.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to adjust communication style to audience whether internally or externally
  • Exceptional communication skills that energize and engage clients and colleagues, and the ability to convey a vision and client-focused solutions
  • Ability to develop and nurture working relationships within Munich Re Specialty and within the broader GSI organization.
  • Ability to think strategically and function tactically
  • Excellent consultative skills which can be deployed at any level of an organization, including negotiation, creativity, emotional intelligence, adaptability and problem-solving skills
  • Strong technical knowledge, business, marketing, and general insurance acumen.
  • Solid grasp of commercial insurance products combined with good knowledge of the insurance industry.
  • Excellent analytical skills and quick understanding of key success factors
  • Strong track record in developing business
  • Good understanding of business economics (i.e. ability to assess business plans, analysis of cornerstones of business models, etc.)
  • Proven ability to lead / manage people as well as handle day-to-day work with high level of autonomy
  • Innovative mindset coupled with ability to explain complex transaction structures to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Sound technical knowledge of traditional lines of business
  • Excellent computer skills with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products (PowerBI, PowerPoint, Word and Excel).
