Job Overview (MINIMUM 5 YEARS UNDERWRITING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED)

Based in the Greater Toronto Area the Business Relationship Manager is responsible for driving growth from a focused portfolio of mortgage brokers while ensuring underwriting integrity by rendering credit decisions on incoming applications from mortgage brokers and clients with adherence to company and insurer policies and guidelines while focusing on service excellence. The Business Relationship Manager also has responsibility for applying due diligence when reviewing required documentation to ensure accuracy and to protect the Company from risk.

Effectively Develops and Grows mortgage business by:

  • Managing a focused portfolio of existing relationships to ensure that an exceptional service experience is provided to develop the organization into a primary choice for mortgage brokers
  • Prospecting for and attracting mortgage brokers who are not currently dealing with the organization
  • Conducting product and policy presentations and regular communications to strengthen existing relationships and establish new relationships as required
  • Possessing deep knowledge of mortgage products, policies and procedures
  • Representing the organization at industry-related events.

Management of mortgage broker portfolio:

  • Mortgage brokers cannot be added or removed from the portfolio without management approval.
  • Broker just adhere to sign-up and due diligence process before being onboarded

Underwriting

  • Effectively communicating lending policy and procedures to brokers to ensure they have strong knowledge
  • Collect and assess credit information and supporting documentation (I.e. income, down payment confirmation). This includes deploying the appropriate due diligence to meet company's credit and quality standards while ensuring all standards related anti-money laundering and anti terrorist financing standards are maintained
  • Approve (within a prescribed lending limit) or decline mortgage transactions
  • Consistently following-up on pertinent documentation and commitments
  • Obtaining Mortgage Insurer approval for insured loans
  • Prepare and instruct the file through FCT
  • Monitor mortgage broker performance to ensure that less than desired performance is put back on track

Core Responsibilities Summary

  • Drive growth and relationships through various approaches including inbound and outbound calls, presentations, and the like to build an individual pipeline.
  • Be a key contributor to delivering an exceptional service experience when interfacing with brokers, clients, and any other valued stakeholder.
  • Maintain minimum service level standards.
  • Underwrite to highest credit quality standards as defined by the Residential Mortgage Underwriting Policy.
  • Negotiate, approve, recommend, and decline applications within Marathon's Residential Underwriting Guidelines.
  • Follow-up on outstanding conditions/documents.
  • Prepare and issue mortgage commitments.
  • Maintain high standard of fulfilling obligations regarding AML/Compliance, Quality Assurance, and the like.
  • Handle difficult interactions and unpopular decisions.
  • Keep up to date with evolving policies and procedures.
  • Performing other duties and assist with special projects, as required.

Although rare, the role may occasionally entail daily travel to and from accounts, events, and the like. At times travel may be overnight to farther reaching locations.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Mortgage license viewed as a very strong asset.
  • Must have 5 years of previous residential mortgage underwriting experience, with detailed working knowledge of real estate and covenant assessments.
  • Detailed working knowledge of principles of credit analysis and risk management.
  • Proficient with Microsoft tools such as Teams, Excel, Power Point, and Word,
  • Demonstrates the ability to make and document decisions that consider all implications and proactive management of risk.
  • Demonstration of solid negotiation and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing volumes and while maintain turnaround time expectations.
  • A very strong customer focus is required with an ability to ensure the customer experience is an exceptional one.
  • Highly communicative and collaborative.
  • View themselves as a key piece of the internal and external culture.
  • An ability to make quick decisions without compromising underwriting quality.
