Job Description

The Health Information Management (HIM) Professional 2 analyses medical data, assigns appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes according to classification systems; complies statistical data for reporting purpose, transcribes medical record documents and performs various administrative functions. The HIM 2 may have supervisory responsibilities related to Medical Records Department. The HIM 2 sends the diagnoses data to Canadian Institute for Health Information on a monthly basis and ensures the data is accurate. This position reports to the Support Services Manager.

Duties will include but not limited to:

  • Maintaining the security and confidentiality of health records by enforcing policies and procedures concerning storage, access and release.
  • Analyzing medical records and assigning codes according to approved classification systems.
  • Ensuring medical records are complete, maintained and regulated in conformance with policies and guidelines.
  • Coding and abstracting and submitting monthly discharges to the national database (CIHI), process corrections, resubmissions and downloading CIHI reports.
  • Processing and authorizing the release of information requests.
  • Providing leadership, direction and supervision to Medical Records part-time and casual staff.
  • Transcribing and typing medical records and reports as required for medical, administrative and statistical purposes.
  • Problem solving technical issues with telecommunication equipment, including Telehealth.
  • Developing and providing reports for statistics, audits (daily & monthly) etc.
  • Ordering supplies for Medical Records.
  • Representing and participating in various committees.
  • Creating and maintaining policies and procedures for Medical Records
  • Liaising with provincial RIM, FOIPP and Telehealth coordinators.
  • Other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of Grade 12
  • Successful completion of a recognized Health Information course recognized by the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).
  • Current membership with the Canadian Health Information Management Association.
  • Must have a good previous work and attendance record.
  • If there are no qualified candidates, consideration will be given to individuals who are willing to be trained by the employer to meet minimum qualifications. A return-in-service of two years will be expected by the employer in exchange for training.

Other Qualifications:

  • Experience in a position encompassing coding and abstracting, data retrieval and quality improvement activities as well as training with ICD10-CA and CCI would be an asset.
  • Experience using Med2020 abstracting system and Crystal report writing would be considered an asset.
  • Additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset.

Salary Range: $28.63 - $31.13 per hour

Bi-Weekly Hours: 75 hours Bi-weekly / Monday - Friday / Days
