Role Description

The Mechanical Designer role is responsible for delivering mechanical designs for systems based on project and customer requirements, using 3D CAD software. The role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams within the company to ensure designs meet project requirements on time and within budget. This role requires a strong attention to detail, proficiency in CAD tools (Solidworks), and a solid understanding of engineering fundamentals. The Mechanical Designer is the single point of contact on specific design engineering projects and responsible for providing update status reports and follow up progress checks, as well as attending meetings for assigned projects. This includes presenting and/or supporting Senior Designers/Engineers/Supervisors in presenting technical information to customers or colleagues as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design Systems, Machinery, Products, and Tools using SolidWorks.
  • Perform engineering calculations and analysis with respect to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, force, etc. as related to machine and tool designs.
  • Produce working drawings including detail drawings and detailed bills of materials (BOMs). Designs will be based on input from: Engineering Management, Project Management, Customers, the Manufacturing Team, and other key project stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate the understanding of the project by defining machine operations and processes required to generate cycle time/process sequence charts and test parameters.
  • Analyze designs and systems for compliance to applicable codes and standards (i.e. CSA, OSHA, CE, etc., or customer specific).
  • Assist other members of the Mechanical Design team as required.
  • As required, participate with the project manager in the development of the project schedule and budgeted hours distribution.
  • Provide accurate reports on project status to the project manager and department managers.
  • Participate with the development and implementation of design / drafting standards, cost reduction methods, and continuous improvements with the purpose of integrating design technology that will facilitate enhanced safety, enhanced functionality, and reduced costs.
  • Ensure that: project milestones / schedule / budget is achieved, mechanical project documentation (quotes, drawing registers, correspondence, requisitions, drawings packages, part and assembly models, schedules, spare parts lists, etc.) are maintained and up to date.
  • Review drawings for: accuracy, material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes, hardness, dimensions, etc.
  • Provide other deliverables and support as defined by the Engineering manager and/or Design Supervisor.
  • Review/establish electrical requirements with respect to input and output devices with electrical designers.
  • Review/establish machine operation, machine sequences, time studies, HMIs, etc., with programmers.
  • Responsible for communicating time estimates and level of effort on design tasks to the Manager or Supervisor, Design Engineering, and Project Manager.
  • Assist the fabricators, machinists, assembly personnel, programmers, and electricians in the debugging, integration, troubleshooting, and commissioning of systems/machinery/tools.
  • Assist/support installers in system/machinery installation at customer facilities as required.
  • Determine tools, fixtures, mockups, and equipment to be used in fabrication, assembly, testing of mechanical components and complete assemblies/systems.
  • As required travel to customer and supplier locations.
  • Additional duties as directed by Management.

Qualifications

  • A post-secondary degree in industrial or mechanical engineering, or a related field
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant industry experience designing complex systems, machines, products, or tooling.
  • Strong ability and experience with SolidWorks, 3D CAD software, in both 3D design and 2D drawings.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design principles including kinematics, force analysis, pneumatics, hydraulics and manufacturing / machine shop techniques, materials & material strengths, standard mechanical and electrical components to be incorporated within designs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively issue sketches and instructions to members of the project team.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with analytical and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to be a positive team player in a high paced environment working under tight deadlines
