The Opportunity

Nelson's Classroom Success team is looking for Early Literacy Specialists to join our freelance educator network. In this role, you will support teachers and school leaders in building foundational literacy skills by delivering professional learning focused on early reading assessment, intervention, and instructional strategies.

You'll work closely with educators across the country, guiding them in applying best practices for literacy screening, differentiation, and targeted reading instruction.

Assignments vary in scope and can be tailored to your availability and expertise (typically 4–10 hours weekly).

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver virtual and in-person sessions to introduce and model the use of early literacy resources such as:
    • The SRA family of products, including Open Court, Early Interventions in Reading, Reading Mastery and Corrective Reading
    • Psych-educational and screening tools for early learners, such as easyCBM
  • Provide coaching and consultative support on best practices in early reading development, assessment, and intervention.
  • Work closely with the Teaching & Learning Lead, Lead Classroom Success Educator, and Assessment and Direct Instruction team to align on audience goals and instructional focus.
  • Prepare for each session using provided materials and digital tools tailored to the needs of the educators.
  • Stay current on early literacy research and pedagogy to ensure sessions reflect strong, evidence-based practice.
  • Collect feedback through customer surveys and submit internal session reports.
  • Contribute to the creation or review of classroom-ready materials such as lesson plans, screening schedules, and literacy support resources.

Requirements

  • Provincially Certified Teacher credentials.
  • Extensive experience in early literacy instruction, reading intervention, and assessment.
  • Strong understanding of the Science of Reading and tiered explicit and systematic instruction.
  • Excellent presentation, coaching, and facilitation skills.
  • Confident using educational technology and digital learning tools.
  • Reliable transportation and availability for both in-person and virtual delivery during school hours.

Benefits

  • All freelance work will be carried out on a work-for-hire basis, with Educators submitting invoices for work on agreed-upon tasks and projects. The standard rate of pay for Classroom Success Freelance Educators is $50/hr.
