Position Overview
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Child and Youth Case Manager to join our team at Inn from the Cold. They will work collaboratively within the larger shelter team as part of the case management process, supporting the familys housing-focused goals. They will build and maintain strong partnerships with the Calgary School Board, other educational institutions, childcare centres, and partner agencies to support the educational needs of children and youth and assist shelter families with school registration, academic transitions, and continued education opportunities for children and youth.
What Youll Do
- Work with parents to ensure children and youth are registered in school and attend school regularly, and assist with access to subsidies and childcare services in the community.
- Support modeling of positive relationships and boundaries around parent/guardian and child interactions, meet families to assess their childrens situation, and monitor progress and provide appropriate referrals.
- Complete Child and Youth questionnaires with families and support families with referrals to community resources, system navigation, and attendance in off-site meetings if required.
- Engage with school board partners and school staff to support families and their academic needs while they are in shelter.
- Assist parents in establishing routines for children and support with positive guidance to build their esteem and resilience.
- Encourage families to attend parenting workshops and information sessions.
- Work with the Shelter team to support families in transition and share information related to a familys exit plan and move-out dates.
- Work collaboratively with the Child and Youth Activity Coordinator who provides post-shelter outreach support for community activities.
- Clearly and effectively communicate in a manner that children and youth understand.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation of client interactions, case notes, case plans, safety concerns, and records of support and service referrals using HOMES, Program Drive folders, and Microsoft Teams.
This position description reflects the general duties of the role but is not intended to include all duties that may be inherent in the position. The Child and Youth Case Manager may be asked to perform other duties as required or assigned.
What You Bring to Our Mission
- Post-secondary degree in social work, child and youth, family systems, human services, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Knowledge and understanding of issues related to family homelessness and housing insecurity
- Experience in a housing-focused shelter environment, housing support, crisis support, case management, and previous work with families is preferred
- Knowledge of trauma-informed and client-centered care, crisis intervention, and conflict resolution skills
- Knowledge of childcare centres and school boards in Calgary, and other child and youth and family-focused community resources
- Solid ability to respond to the complex needs of clients in a community setting
- Current First Aid/CPR and Suicide Intervention Certification
- Computer literacy, including effective working skills of MS Word, Excel, and e-mail required
- Excellent teamwork and team-building skills
- Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
- Must be able to be dependent upon to plan and organize work effectively and ensure its completion
