Position Summary:

Reporting to the Manager, Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit, the Mental Health Crisis Worker is responsible for provision of a full range of client-centred clinical services. Responsibilities include but are not limited to, responding to patients and their families in crisis, providing clinical assessments including physical health, medication and side effects, allergies and interactions, risk assessments, collaboration, care coordination, patient and family education, provision of patient centred advocacy, referral and/or facilitating care and discharge planning and liaise with community partners. Working as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team, the Registered Nurse is responsible for the provision of quality nursing care to a patient or group of patients. The Registered Nurse will be an integrated member of the Emergency Department team, where they will be available to support patients and their families in crisis, supporting transitions in care, and ensuring that individuals and families have been connected to the appropriate resources available to them within the community. The provision of such nursing care is expected to be within the Standards of Nursing Practice (CNO) and the standards of the hospital and particular program.

The Registered Nurse is expected to maintain competence and skills through on-going participation in continuing education and will be able to demonstrate proof of such participation. The Registered Nurse actively participates in the CNO Quality Assurance Program.

Requirements:

Education and Experience:

• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• BScN is preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Post diploma certification in psychiatric/mental health nursing considered an asset
• Demonstrated experience on risk assessments, suicide prevention, principles of crisis theory and intervention
• Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development as evidenced by participation in programs, courses, seminars that enhance skills and knowledge.
• Valid BCLS and CPR certification
• Demonstrated competency to administer naloxone in emergent situations.Non-Violent Crisis Prevention and Intervention Training required
• Completion of Suicide Intervention Training and Crisis Management is considered an asset???????

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Previous experience working in Mental Health program.
• Proven ability to conduct nursing assessments, risk assessments, suicide prevention,
• Demonstrated crisis intervention skills for both telephone and person-to-person
• Demonstrated knowledge and skill in providing treatment methods such as individual, group and family therapy, to persons with an acute and/or severe mental illness.
• Knowledge of inpatient and community based resources for children, youth, and adults with mental health
• Knowledge of and experience in providing Trauma informed care.
• Experience providing a range of evidence based therapy modalities, including Cognitive behavioural therapy, Narrative Therapy, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, motivational interviewing and crisis intervention/management.
• Knowledge of relevant legislation including, but not limited to, The Mental Health Act, The Regulated Health Professionals Act, The Substitute Decisions Act, The Health Care Consent Act, and the Personal Health Information Protection Act.
• Knowledge of psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment methods.
• Strong clinical assessment skills in mental health
• In-depth knowledge of community resources, programs and agencies available for clients with mental health/substance use disorders and their families/significant others.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
• Experience working in a computerized environment, sound knowledge and understanding of computer-based operations
• Participates in research and continuous quality improvement
• Demonstrated sensitivity and awareness of the stigma frequently experienced by persons carrying a psychiatric diagnosis
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering culturally diverse environment and 2SLGBTQ sensitive care environment
• Excellent oral and written communication, critical thinking and interpersonal skills
• Proven flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment,
• Excellent time management, organizational and prioritization skills as relates to patient care
