The Accountant will be responsible for managing the financial transactions, reporting, and compliance needs specific to a legal environment. This role demands familiarity with client trust accounts, billing processes, and regulatory requirements that govern law firms.
About the Role
Manage day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, and bank reconciliations.
Handle client trust accounts (IOLTA) in strict compliance with legal accounting standards and regulations.
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for firm partners and stakeholders.
Oversee the billing process, including timekeeper entries, client invoices, and collections.
Ensure compliance with legal financial regulations and reporting standards (e.g., SRA Accounts Rules, Bar Council rules depending on jurisdiction).
Collaborate with legal teams to ensure accurate reporting of work-in-progress (WIP) and disbursements.
Support annual audits and liaise with external auditors.
Monitor cash flow, budgets, and financial forecasts.
Manage payroll and employee expense reimbursements.
Recommend and implement financial best practices and process improvements.
What You Bring
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA or equivalent certification preferred.
Minimum of [3-5] years' accounting experience, ideally within a law firm or the legal sector.
Strong understanding of legal accounting rules and trust account management.
Proficiency in legal accounting software (e.g., Elite, Clio, LEAP, or similar platforms).
Excellent Excel skills and familiarity with general accounting software (QuickBooks, Sage, etc.).
High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and integrity.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
