Your key responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day supervision, leadership, and mentorship to a team of five direct reports and one indirect report focused on engineering support for development applications, subdivision design, municipal servicing, and capital planning.
  • Manage the engineering review and approval process for development proposals, from preliminary concepts to detailed designs and construction, ensuring all work aligns with municipal standards, legislation, and best practices.
  • Coordinate with internal departments (like Environmental Utilities, Transportation, and Parks), external consultants, developers, and regional partners to ensure well-integrated, forward-thinking community design.
  • Conduct technical reviews, engineering analysis, cost estimates, and feasibility studies; prepare and manage tenders, service agreements, and functional servicing reports.
  • Interpret, update, and enforce City standards, bylaws, and specifications related to engineering design and construction.
  • Represent the department in meetings with developers, consultants, and other stakeholders to ensure transparency, technical accuracy, and a solutions-focused approach to development challenges.
  • Support long-range infrastructure planning by identifying risks, gaps, and improvement opportunities tied to off-site levies, asset management, and lifecycle costing.
  • Foster a collaborative, professional, and high-performing team culture through training, coaching, and performance development.

What you bring

  • Deep knowledge of civil engineering principles, including design and servicing for stormwater, water and wastewater systems, road networks, and subdivision infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with municipal planning processes and land development legislation, including Alberta's Municipal Government Act and Off-Site Levy regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical teams in a public-sector or consulting environment, with the ability to manage competing deadlines, mentor staff, and hold team members accountable.
  • Strong project management, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to provide sound recommendations on complex technical issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build strong working relationships with internal staff, developers, consultants, and the public.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, engineering tools (e.g., AutoCAD), and GIS-based systems, with a willingness to learn new platforms and tools as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with APEGA, or eligibility to register.
  • At least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in civil or municipal engineering, including a minimum of two (2) years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta driver's license.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
